Uh OH....

...at 6500K have developed a "ticking, clicking" noise in the drivetrain somewhere! Started yesterday on a 70 mile interstate run......sounds like a muted version of the old "card in the bike spokes " for those of you old enough to remember that! ..or when a speedometer cable would rattle according you your speed..... another "oldy" Speeds up slows down with the rolling speed of the vehicle, not related to engine rpms, does it in drive or neutral ( coasting ) but does not seem to do it in reverse....... have checked all the wheels, brake rotors, etc. for something "sticking" in the way....nothing....sounds more like the center of the vehicle or toward the back.....is worse today than yesterday. Have tried raising the vehicle to max height, putting the system in low range, etc. Still there.......Thinking drive shaft or differentials??? Calling the dealer tomorrow....

Have you checked for a stone embedded in the tread of one of your tires?

So.....on the way to the dealer in the pouring rain ( noise getting louder ) i go through a big puddle, then crank the speed up to a constant 75 and POOF.... the noise is gone! I cancel the appt. and my final assesment is that "something" was attached to some turning part of the vehicle and was hitting something metal like perhaps the skid plates.....I looked under there as best I could but never could see anything. Could have been a piece of paper, plastic, maybe tape or something leftover from assembly?? Who knows..... but the combination of water and speed cleared it away. Onward..... get the windshield replaced Thursday!

It just further proves that rattles are live elements and find ways to escape before being discovered by the dealer.

Funny thing was...... I KNEW that this was "findable!" Just by the sound, past experience with cars, etc. ..... I knew it had to be something "external" and quick fix BUTTTT I could not get under there and check it out..... can't wait to hear it from my mechanic on Thursday when I go in to have the windshield replaced.....he will jab me a few times...."you think your MB is going to be making CLICKING sounds??" HA! ... all in fun!

Still good to know it wasn't an actual mechanical issue. Let us know how the windshield replacement turns out.
