Any Solutions for Missing Third Row Sunshade (Pano Roof)?

I was well aware of the fact that the pano roof meant no sun shade for the third row before I picked up my new GL. But I was reminded quickly of how poor a decision MB made on this one on the ride home from the dealership yesterday with my new GL (which I otherwise love, BTW). One of my kids in the third row complained right away about the sun in her eyes in the third row and then put on a hat to block out the sun. Come on MB, what were you thinking . . .

So I am wondering if anyone on the board with a new GL with the pano roof option has tried a fix for the missing third row sun shade. I am thinking about tinting the moonroof but wonder what tint would be right as I would like to keep some visibility out for the third row passengers but block more of the sun. I think the current moonroof glass is already tinted (although in the glass as opposed to a film) possibly around the 20% equivalent (but not sure), so how would a tint on a tint work? Another alternative would be to use a make shift sun shade like the ones used on the rear side windows with suction cups. Any other thoughts?

I will put in another call to MBUSA on this one now that I have picked-up the car and have "real world" experience. No insights were gained from a similar call last year.

Thanks

SO: First of all congratulations on your GL63. It has been a long wait.
For the 3rd row moonroof - I did a tint on mine - not sure on the % as I had the dealer's tint guy figure it out. It has to be either 20% or 30%

I think it's bizarre they didn't have a shade on that 3rd row glass. I tinted with 3M's Crystalline at 40% more for heat reduction than light reduction. Typically, my white Golden is in the back shedding on the black carpet.

Front windows tinted with Color Stable 35% (discontinued 3m product) but, best color match to rears (except for slight green tint especially with the double pain fronts).

Escort 9500ci with "Live" being installed this week while I'm out of town including the instrument cluster display. My understanding is very tricky install with the new Distronic Plus or Parktonic system triggering false alerts.

We'll see when I return how it works and if it works well! I have the 9500ci with Live in my Porsche (works great with iPhone) and had the 9500ci on both my Q7 and SL and really liked it. Discrete, great protection but, VERY expensive to install properly.

I would consider the new passport max radar detector.... supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, although I am a big Valentine 1 fan but I am so annoyed with the false alerts in the K band.

I do the "ci" or Custom Install so discrete, with laser jammer and nothing in windshield. I really like the "Live" option too.

I Currently Have A V1 Etched Into The Rear View Mirror With Two Blinders In The Front And Two In The Rear For Laser Protection. When I Get The New GL I My Guy Wants To Install The Passport Max For Radar And The Laser Interceptor For Laser Jamming.

This is an example how it can be integrated in to the Merc instrument cluster:

This combined with the GPS capabilities, laser shifting, and Live, this will be fully integrated and clean.

I think that works well but the only flaw is depending on what screen you currently have displayed you will not get a visual warning only an audible alert

No problem as typically it's only a green light or a flashing red light with the audible.

This system also doesn't conflict with the Distronic Plus K band signals.

the only reason it doesn't conflict with the Distronic plus is because anything over 20 miles per hour its shutting the k-band Off .pretty much useless

Sam and Trimmer2:

Thanks very much for the feedback. I am going to tint the rear moonroof as well using a 20 percent tint and see if that is enough. Limo tint is the next level and figure that would be too dark. I will let everyone know how that works for us.

Kind regards

SO:

Please do let us know how it works. Mine is due next month but I can see that will be a real problem here in ATX and I'd like to get it done before pick up if possible. Good luck.
