Dog hauler

I have a '14 GL350. There is a border about 3/16" wide around the outside mirror glass on each side. The border is part of the mirror glass, but it looks a bit different than the main part of the glass. Does anyone know what the border is or does?

i think it has to do with the electrochromic auto-dimming feature on the outer mirrors. if you drive at night and someone's headlights are behind you, the "inner" mirror area is dimmed (i.e., headlight glare behind you is reduced). the little strip of outer border remains "normal" rather than dimmed.
