GL550 Exhaust / Muffler

Is there an exhaust system or replacement muffler for the 2014 GL550? The exhaust note on ours is somewhere between a Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf...I'm not looking for something too loud. Just for something that at least lets you know its a V8

I was just going to post a similar question about the GL 450. I feel the same way! Anyone have any input to either? Sorry to jump on the thread but maybe we can both get a good answer. I can't find anything aftermarket.

Well, before yopu judge your exhaust "note" - please understand you are not going to hear that much of what is there from inside the cabin.

Same issue MB tackled with the new S-Class - so they went to "flapped" system so under full acceleration inner channel of each side, flap opens for a lower note - but again, S-Class or GL - what you are going to "hear" inside the cabin has very little to do with what someone will hear "outside" and to the rear.

Agree, I'm not looking for the sound inside the cabin, just outside. If you hear a Chevy Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, Range Rover, or Other V8 SUV/Van they sound much better.

I'm with Rob here. Take performance gains aside...the exhaust note, even outside, is important to me. Regardless if you hear it in the cabin, it's no different than putting on new wheels. You don't see them from the inside, but it all adds to the overall vehicle.

The dealer here said he could add a muffler to give it more of the 63 "bark" but I wonder if he's using a 550 or even a modified 63 setup.

Did you decide on the Renntech mufflers? I looked at their website and they indicate that they have a system for the GL550. Has anyone heard a 550 with this muffler system, GL or not the sound should be similar.

CL550 & CL55 AMG
Exhaust note(s)

Am in similar position with CL550 - asked for sound akin to C63 AMG - want growl when the pedal is pushed but not that annoying drone on the hwy.
Have received the following suggestions
1) "remove the resonators"
or
2)"AMG cars have Eisenmann exhaust which sound the best"
or
3) replace mufflers with Magnaflow

Tough to suggest any one as "beauty of the sound in the ear of the beholder" and any misstep could be costly- hope this helps.
Cheers

I just had the Renntech Muffler, ECU, and Spark Plugs installed on my GL550, and the only thing I can say at the moment is WOW. I'll share my
thoughts this weekend after I spend some time behind the wheel.

My husband is complaining that he can't hear me pull in (GL550). Should I be worried?

He has modified his BMW 335 so I won't be surprised if he wants to modify this. Keep us posted on your new exhaust.

Figured I would bump this thread. I'm looking to get more bite from my exhaust as well. Has anyone found a nice way to do this without paying $6K for the brabus or renntech down pipes with cats?

Would changing just the mufflers make a difference?

Here is something that I was thinking about... If you go to TopCar and check out the ML, they have a video with the sound before and after... You would definitely have to do some exhaust fitting as I don't think the standard 450/550 Exhaust is as large as the AMG.

Thanks. The local guy here in Houston recomended removing the resonators and adding Magnaflow mufflers. I would do this if I could switch it on and off. Seems the only good options cost around $5,000. I may just leave it as is

Talking

This exhaust will work on the GL550/63...and possibly the 450
It will require some adapters for the axel back conversion. (You have to deal with the different diameters of the exhaust pipes). It will sound exactly as this ML500. $2000 +/-
The expense comes in if you have to change the rear valance...
i am goin to replace my back muffler with the F1 version.... I need a little more sound from my AMG ... The goal being to sound like the C63 normally aspirated
Car.
I would not consider any other "American" solution..... Maybe if you found a rear muffler off of a crashed vehicle... You could experiment with pulling out some of the interior components and or baffling.

Does anyone know what the M278 Biturbo engine is doing on cold startup? If I could get it to sound like that all the time I would be set. Honestly, the sound it makes when cold is one of the best engine sounds of any car out of there. I was standing next to a Maserati idling the other day and I thought gosh, that sound doesn't even compare to the M278 during a cold startup. You have to be back by the tailpipes to hear it though and it only does it for 30-45 seconds.

Look at Supersprint... I went the Renntech route and it was a disaster on my 2013 ML550, both with lack of product quality and horrible customer service. I am planning to add the Supersprint offering in the next month. Link to GL option:

I believe that is the time it takes for the cats to heat up.... I love that initial sound too... I do know that the car is not equipped with any valve system like the S class.

I am also looking at exhaust upgrade options for our '14 GL550. Have any of you gone with the Renntech or Brabus upgrades? I am looking for some feedback or advice. Does anyone have a clip of the Renntech exhaust sound on a GL?

I found this YouTube clip of the GL550 with Brabus Valve Controlled Exhaust - it sounds amazing!

If any of you went with the Renntech down pipes, is the sound comparable?

Thanks!

My ONLY complaint with our GL550 is the lack of exhaust note. My friends Denali (stock)sounds 10 times better than our GL. I figured I'd comment and bring this to the top to see if there were any updates.

$2600 Supersprint system... You do have to cut the old one off from the axle.
I decided on a anti laser system instead.
