Accessories for your X166 GL

My husband and I ordered a metallic black GL450 that is hopefully en-route right now. I'm thinking about getting the chrome door handle inserts. Will the handle itself come black or chrome? Trying to visualize how the chrome piece will look behind it and if I would like it. Is it important for scratch protection? Also, is there adhesive on the parts so you can apply it yourself or would I need the dealer to do it? And same thing for the chrome fins? All this waiting is costing me a lot of $$ in options and accessories. lol Oh well, go big or go home, right?
Thanks!
Thanks!
the cup inserts do prevent regular scratches behind the handle, but some people rarely notice that anyway. so it's really personal preference. i didn't have it on my X164 and i thought it was fine, but i lease so i only had the car for 30 months. i suppose if you have a black car the scratches are going to be obvious and pervasive so the cups will help.
mine came from the factory but i believe aftermarket you can apply yourself. they come with adhesive backs and you just clean the area and lay them in there. same w/ the hood fins. i installed my own hood fins on my X164 and it was pretty easy. just have to make sure you line them up properly, as the lengths are different for 1, 2, 3.
i definitely wouldn't pay the dealer to do it, maybe if you have the parts already they would install them for you at delivery without charging.

the face of the handle is still body colored, with a chrome overlay on the top of the handle (as you are looking down from above the car).

[QUOTE=JimBarnhart;5811361]I'll start with my accessories.
4) Weathertech mats for front and center floors. Bought from my dealer with a discount coupon. I can't remember the price, but I think it was $150. I like them, wish the passenger mat went higher up the firewall.

Is there only one floor mat available for the 2014 gl. our saleman is "throwing them in" and he doesn't know what they look like. He's just not a car guy. I knew much more about the GL than he did.
Are the mercedes matts just rebadged weathertech?
I asked him about the installation of mud guard with runing boards. He had no clue and also told me to order the Roof rack elsewhaer to get a better price????

There all different types of mats. My dealer said he'd throw in all weather mats but they are not the weather techs. Mercedes has a rebranded weather tech to your other question. I ended up buying weather techs bc the ones they gave me for free didn't provide as much protection with the kids in the back.
I was planning on getting mud guards but with the dual exhaust, not possible. So don't know the answer to that question.

I was told there were all-season MB liners (the re-branded Weathertechs) AND all-season mats. Neither were available with a 3rd row, but you can get the Weathertech version to match the re-branded liners. That's what I did, and I also got the WT cargo liners. The liners are what's pictured on the website accessories. Think it says $175 for 1st & 2nd row set.
I was concerned that the WT cargo liners would be too rigid and wouldn't allow the 3rd row to be raised, so I got some Lloyds rubber liners, but I didn't like the way they were cut (wavy on one side and straight on the other) so I got the WT's instead (sculpted on both sides), and am glad I did. They will give more protection around the edges with the lip around, match the other interior MB/WT mats, and are actually lighter than the rubber cargo liner and will be easier to roll or fold back if I need the 3rd row unexpectedly. I also got the smaller WT cargo liner when I plan to use the 3rd row. When I get the vehicle I will try the power 3rd row and see if it lifts and flops the liner back automatically but I'm guessing so as the liners reviews stated as much.
We ordered mudflaps for the GL450, which the dealer stocks and will install. In our snowy climate, we couldn't imagine NOT having them, especially with black paint and rock chips, etc. I'll take a pic when we get the vehicle. I had a hard time finding any photos online other than the closeup shot on the MB site.

Grrr... just went to MB site to find the pic of the mudlaps and noticed this text:
"Not available for GL550, GL63 AMG or models with side running boards."
http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicl...No%3aB66528236
I had ordered them from the dealer to install upon delivery because they told me it was compatible. I'll find out soon, hopefully.

Just posted in a different thread, but my GL450 came today and they are able to put on mudlaps. It's a different part number for the front wheel wells due to the running boards. You can see the photos I took in that thread (with flaps held up). I'll take more on Thursday when they are installed.

I didn't get the part number, but I was standing next to the parts manager when he pulled it up on the computer by looking under "GL450" and there were two parts: "w/running boards", and "without". He didn't have them in stock, but he pulled some similar running boards versions for a different model so I could see them against my vehicle. The rear mudflaps are the standard ones. If your dealer can't look them up that way, let me know and I can try to call the parts dept. and track down the part number.

2013 Mercedes GL550
To answer the original post
I also had the V8 Biturbo side fender decals installed (the same as the GL63 given that my GL550 is also a V8 Biturbo). I just liked the look.
However the certified mercedes body shop I had do all the work said they could not install the AMG door pins/locks. Said they were to wide and the dealership also stated this. That is not what people on here have been saying so I may just do this myself.
I also did the chrome door handles, all weather floor mats, and the license plate.

I put the chrome fins on my GLE-450AMG. They were $212 plus tax from my dealer. Fairly straightforward to stick them on. They're foam tape with a prep solution that insures a tacky surface for the tape.
I also have a WeatherTec mat in the back and replaced the cheap plastic tire valve covers with the AMG metal ones.

This is a before and after picture of how I attached mine on my GL550. The same way it's attached on the GL63 AMG. I also bought the OE Tune with the MyGenius handheld tuner to flash my ECU to increase the 429HP to 550HP (AMG territory.) Can't wait to receive it tomorrow!
