Winter tires - GL550

I've been looking at tire options for our new GL450, and found out about the Nokians via the tire selector at discounttire.com. Visiting the Nokian website, I found there were a couple of options for the stock tire size.
From what I've been reading, the Continentals are really poor on snow, but I'm waiting to see for myself once we get our next snowfall. I'm at least hoping to defer buying some new rubber for a little while.

But I definitely would get snows. Think of it this way: the cost per mile is lower if youre snows cost less than your other tires (i.e $326/ea for Conti UHP) So you're getting a safer gripper tire for less $...
Good luck

Get skinnier width if possible
My 275 nokians are good but they understeer too easily. I ran 255s on the x164. I should have done the same with the x166.
They simply slice through snow better. - my 2 cents

Anybody interested, dealt with over 20" on Long Island with my ml550 and new set of 275/45-20 Pirelli ice and snows. The traction is almost shocking. I stop on hills just to accelerate up them. Pulled a Chevy heavy duty out of a snow bank with my toe strap, he was appreciative yet extremely humbled. He's added to the list of escalades and others that I've yanked out of problems. They were on Pirelli scorpion winters. Also excellent but the "ice and snows" are even better. Safe travels. Incidentally, the off road package with 11.5" of ground clearance is priceless at times.

Rereading my post I realize that I wasn't clear. What I was trying to say was that I've pulled out numerous cars/trucks on my scorpions winters that were also outstanding for 3 winter seasons. I switched to the "ice and snows" for the extra 1/32 of tread this season.
