2011 MB GL550

Hi there. I was wondering what current performance mods exist for my 2011 MB GL550. Chips, cold air intakes, etc.

I'd love to know rough pricing as well.

Thank you.

dyno chart

Hi I'm interested in this tune, is the dyno chart before v.s. after the tune available somewhere?

Gotta get this tune.

Is this something that you have to have the truck for, or can it be done via HPTuners software or at the dealer?

I wanted to get this tune but I am worried about the load rating on the tranny. Per MB spec, the tranny is good for 700 nm but this tune takes the engine output to 780 nm. Do you know if this is within the factor of safety?

Not sure what car you drive, but Brabus has TUV approved and tested and has their tune limited to 960 Nm for the GL63 7 speed transmission.

With a power output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) at 5,300 rpm the BRABUS B63S - 700 engine in the ML 63 surpasses its origin by up to 129 kW / 175 hp (173 bhp) – depending on whether the car was delivered with or without Performance package. The GL 63 with an identical power output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) adds 105 kW / 143 hp (141 hp). Just as impressive in both SUVs is the increase in peak torque. Both tuning versions produce 960 Nm (708 lb-ft) of torque from a low 2,000 rpm. Peak torque was limited electronically to protect the drivetrain.

Looks like all GL might have the 7 speed transmission, not 100% sure. So looks like you'll be fine.

Very nice work! Just out of curiosity, how does the tuned engine perform around 2000-3000rpm in terms of torque? Asking because from the data before tune the peak torque happens around 1800rpm but after tune the peak torque is reached at more than 4000rpm so wondering how it works for daily road driving.

Depends on the tune but most go full boost right off the bat so it would hit at 1,800 rpm as well. Very few tune to save the transmission in the lower RPM's. If the peak torque moves higher in the upper rpm range, the tuner is limiting boost to save the transmission or as a measure to control heat. From the dyno charts I've seen the torque plateaus around 1800 rpm and will continue to around 4,800 rpm and start declining since the turbos are running out of ability to move enough air.

You would need to cross reference transmission part numbers. Believe GL63 has different internals.

Why do they have the same power after the tune? Something seems off

Nothing is off. The 2013 and 2014 GL450 and GL550 share the same engine (M278) just the GL450 engine is detuned. They have exactly the same hardware so the tuning result should be the same. From 2015 GL450 was equipped with the turbocharged M276.

Can anyone comment to the exhaust note after a tune on the M278? It sounds pretty stout on cold starts with stock tune but is pretty muted otherwise. Was hoping the tune would give subtle reminders of what's actually under the hood.

Doesn't sound much different unless you get a burble tune. To enhance, high-flow cats or no cats, and remove resonator.

How much would all of this typically go for?

$1k-$3k Tune.
$100-$200 cut out resonators and weld in straight pipe.
$1,500-$5,000 for downpipes with or without cats.

burble tune is sufficient. Everything else just makes it louder.

Thanks Chedman! Is the burble subtle or is it the loud popping? I personally prefer subtle sounds of power rather than awaking the whole neighborhood (or making audible to cops) of my fast driving. If the burble is loud pops I'd probably opt out of that feature.

LOUD - don't do burble then=).

Tune + high-flow cats (this is for the ml and gl https://www.world-motorsports.com/ra...downpipes.html) or you can do the renntech ones (renntech causes a check engine light without a tune, the RADO can be used with or without a tune) + remove resonator (I personally went with Supersprint mid-pipe https://www.supersprint.com/ww-en/su...gl-63-amg.aspx and brabus rear section).
