Windshield cracked top to bottom.

Drove out to Lake Powell in Utah for our annual house boating trip.

The trip out was uneventful until an old timer in a pickup truck threw a rock and it cracked the windshield. This was about 2 miles from our destination too. Crack instantly grew to about 12" long vertically.

Vehicle sat in the sun for 8 days while we were on the boat. Upon returning the crack had ran all the way down to the bottom. This is on the passenger side.

Drove home to San Diego without issue.

So now my question is should I have safelite replace with generic glass? Or have dealer do it with OEM glass. Haven't priced it either way yet, but I'm assuming it will be 2x -3x more to have the dealer do it with oem glass.

We are 14 months into our 36 month lease also. I assume the car will have to have oem glass on it when I give it back at lease end, but chances are the windshield will have to replaced at least once more before then.

What to do?

Is the generic glass available for X166 yet? And does it have the wind-noise reducing lamination that I think the OEM glass has? I'm curious myself as mine also got a windshield hit a couple weeks back. For now they were able to seal it to keep it from growing.

I would recommend you change it so you don't get a ticket like I did.

A gaggle of MB's
I have not seen generic/X166 glass yet - last time was checked was 3-4 weeks ago.

"Most" insurance will cover OE class - subject to deductible - if generic not available.

Keep the beat !

2013 ML550
I recently had the windshield replaced on my 13' ML550. No idea how the crack developed. It happened sitting in my driveway nowhere near anything that could have hit it. Started as a 3"-4" crack about 6" below the headliner and spread rapidly after driving it for a few days. My dealer quoted me $1600+ to change it. I ended up bringing it to the certified MB repair shop near me and they accepted Allstate's offer of $990 for the OE windshield.

I had to have the windshield replaced on my 2013 GL450 after a rock hit....contacted my insurance company and told them I wanted the work done/coordinated by my dealer....for a variety of reasons ( all the electronics in the rearview mirror assembly being one ), anyway, they agreed. OEM glass was used and they made sure the MB signature decal in the lower corner was replace, etc. Kept the car in the workshop overnight to let the sealant cure properly. Cant say enough good things about my dealership and their efforts to treat customers with the level you would expect!

FYI. Generic glass is not yet available for this car.

Safelite is replacing the glass with oem glass. Cost is $984.

2015 GL350
So depressed! My MY2015 GL350 is less than 3 weeks old and I just got a 10" crack on the driver side of the windshield. I did purchase the MB windshield insurance and just scheduled a service visit to replace the cracked windshield. It looks like Safelite is going to do the repair and I was told they are using a MB OEM windshield (I'm not even sure if aftermarket windshields are made for x166's).

My questions are 1) any specific questions I should ask Safelite, outside of if OEM windshield will be used 2) is there any value in taking my GL to the dealership so they can "supervise" the repair job versus having it done in my driveway 3) are there any special after-repair activities needed (like letting the car cure for a certain period of time, leaving the windows open while it cures, etc...) 4) others who have had windshields replaced...have you been able to notice any difference in the original versus the replace?

YES.....if your dealer will do that for you! I had to have my windshield replaced ( 13 GL450 3months old ) and I called the dealer and they gave me the name of the glass installer they work with ( Safelite) so I called my insurance and said this is who I want to install the glass and Safelite and the dealer took care of it all. Advantage.....MB supervised the reattachment of all the window electronics, housed the car inside overnight and I picked it up the next day..... 24hrs cure and you are good to do anything. Safelite did a beautiful job....another advantage of taking it to the dealer is that they made sure the MB signature logo on the glass was reapplied...Safelite won't have that decal , but your dealer does!

With a MB windshield replacement - when driving keep the sunroof or rear window "cracked" to prevent positive pressure build up from inside/climate-control.

When parked - keep sunroof/rear-window "cracked" to prrevent cabin pressure build-up from heat.

Do not wash car.

Follow that procedure for 3-4 days after install.

Keep the beat !
