ECO START/STOP System for 2015 GL

The order guide indicated that all the variant would have ECO start/stop function.(except gl350). However, I couldn't find the eco button on GL550 from the real car pics dealer posted recently. I double checked the updated mbusa.com and found out only gl450 carry that function.

First, the torque difference.
Now, the eco function missing on gl550.

Why not ECO option on the 350? Because people chosing that model love the noise at idle? Or because they wish to use a little more fuel?

Or is there some reason an option standard in most markets the car is shipped to should not be available within the US?

Why would there have to be a button? Wouldn't it just be something in the settings to enable or disable? That's how a Porsche works.

Regarding diesels, I've always been of the opinion that starting/stopping a diesel engine is hard on them. Also fuel economy is excellent when idling. I have no idea if my opinion is supported factually.

I understand. I was just thinking that maybe instead of utilizing the button on the 2015 they could have done it in software. Apparently not.

It is not supported by Mercedes usage of start stop outside the US. Not only does the GL350 have start/stop outside the US but we have other Mercedes vehicles with start/stop. Generally, more diesel models have start/stop than gasoline here.

The start/stop is very smooth on diesels we have, it does not activate until the engine is at temperatue, and once up to temperature a diesel starts imediately and it is difficult to see how there would be wear. If the engine cooled outside range the constant heating and cooling would create wear, but the system prevents cooling off.

Very interesting and good info.

I'm gonna suspect that it's perhaps an emissions certification issue in the USA?

The latest Porsches (991) actually have a button in the console between the driver / passenger. Thank goodness it remembers your last setting. Mine is always - OFF

When MBUSA states the MPG for 2015 GL450, did they include the benefit of this eco start/stop system? They said 17-21. Would it be 18-22 if you put eco system on all the time?

Sorry, please disregard, I did not see Dalema's post before replying. And mine always remains off as well .

Not sure about the Cayenne, but my 991s has a button on the center console that defeats the start/stop.

This thread got off to a rocky start - the updated Dealer order Guide says ECO for GL450 - ... sorry for the misunderstanding

Good to know. Maybe I'm confusing Porsche with some other vehicle.

I've heard the most annoying aspect in some other countries is it always defaults to ON each time you start the car. So you have to hit the button each time.

It was funny the first time it kicked in for me. I was like - what happened, felt like I was driving a manual and I stalled it - but in a PDK.

Our Mercedes with the ECO defaults to 'On' every time.

Yes - and a press at any time will "disable" for the remainder of that trip.

EPA economy ratings do not account for eco-start/stop - not part of their current test standards.

start/stop eco button

Is there a way to change the eco start/stop button to "off" when the car is started. It always defaults to "on" now. 2014 E 350 4matic wagon, USA.
Thanks for any assistance.

See posts 16 and 17 of this thread for the GL. I assume the same applies for your E class.

2015 GL550 missing ECO Start/Stop

Recently took delivery of 2015 GL550 (purchased on 11/30). Was told by salesperson that ALL GLs come with the Eco start/stop. Even during orientation, was told by lady showing us the features of the car that it's a feature that is "always on". Did some research and found out that it's only available on 2015 GL450 and AMG.

Even the MB website indicates that it's available on GL550 (see link and screen capture).

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/techno...00ccec1e35RCRD

I'm upset because this is an useful feature to have that helps with fuel economy and one of the main reasons for purchase of SUV. Whether intentional or not, it's deceptive. Thoughts?

Pardon my not very good English, I from south america. Personally, I think you get you money out and take directly to salesman and give him much money for saving you frustration of golf cart like stutter when acceleration from stop. Had he not been confused you would have ended up with Prius like vehicle. Be thankful for confused Mercedes salesman. Mercedes salesman very good at being confused often.
