Convert 450/350 to 550

Hi.

Have anybody tried to convert/switch bumpers and install fender flares to GL450/350 to look like GL550 ? If yes - where did you buy all parts and how much it would cost ?

Thanks.

P.S. I can't understand why US cutomers have no AMG option like Canadians have.

I haven't tried, but you can do it and there are several options:

1) Simply buy OEM Mercedes parts off the GL63/GL550 and install. OEM parts are expensive as you can imagine.

2) Buy aftermarket kit like Brabus or Lorinser in case you want to be unique.

3) Go with an aftermarket copy, you can find a ton on Alibaba.com. I have a bit more comfort with eBay, using a credit card/paypal for some protection.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271555583452?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Be cautious of what the kits are made of - the link is plastic not fiberglass, which I recommend. There are pros/cons to fiberglass, but I prefer plastic.

Fitment is the biggest question. OEM should fit with little to no modification. Aftermarket, I've always had to do some custom work to make it fit -- if you have a body shop that handles aftermarket kits, you are fine. If not (even a body shop with 20 years experience with no aftermarket experience) -- don't do it. They'll charge you a lot and will take 2x as long to do the labor.

Fuel economy (GL350) with AMG looks - is the perfect combo for me.

I've installed AMG body kit to my GL450. Order them from Alibaba.com. They were perfect fit according to the body shop who did the installation. Cost US$3500 includes LED running board.

My rims are OEM, got them from Ebay. Color of the car is polar white. I got the body kit from here:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detai...935599403.html

I bought my car in San Francisco and shipped it to Taiwan when I relocate to Taiwan for work. Installation and painting were done in Taiwan and cost only US$400 due to the cheaper labor. It would cost around $800 in the States.

Shipping is another big cost need to consider. If you live in a west cost city with a shipping port such as Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, or LA, shipping cost can be as low as US$200 if you pick up the parts by yourself at the port. Else, shipping cost can be up to $1,000 for inland cities.

Need some opinion on this. The body shop didn't know the horizontal part of front grill should be chrome and just installed it without painting. It doesn't look odd because my the car is white. Should I have the black part painted to chrome to look like original design?

How much was the import tax to Taiwan when you shipped it there? I'm considering shipping my car over there as well but when I imported a 4.8is X5 over there i got killed in taxes

Import tax is 60% for cars $60k and under and 70% for cars over $60k based current market price if is used. Taiwan only sells GL350BT, price is US$110,000.

I haven't seen a x166 GL on Taiwan roads yet. Perhaps in Taipei but not in Taichung. I've only seen x164 GL450. 3.5 million NT is for a base 350 without adding for options correct? I guess I'll wait another 2 years before sending my car back there.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread! I would love to add the amg body styling to my 350 but always thought it was cost prohibitive

Anyone else buy the kit from Ali Baba?

I am thinking of pulling the trigger, however, I wanted to see if anyone else did this and dealt with customs, fitment, etc.

I got the AMG body kit from this Alibaba site: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detai...935599403.html
If the link doesn't work, go to the company's site in Alibaba and search for GL63: http://cn-gaobiao.en.alibaba.com/
Although it list a minimum order, you can buy one or partial set at a time.

Let me share my interesting experience on buying the body kit which comes with everything including the exhaust tips and LED running board. Before I pulled the trigger of paying $3500 for the parts, I was skeptical on the fitting. After 30+ emails and phone calls with the seller, the seller says Alibaba has a new escrow service which he never used before, that can protect the buyer. The escrow service won’t pay the money to the seller until the buyer is satisfied with the product. I was sold on this idea but found out the escorw service costs 5% of the entire order. I told the seller I don’t want to pay $175 for the service, he than offer me something no online seller would do. He would just take 30% deposit first and pay the rest after installation. His reason was he is very confident on his product and has sold hundreds of AMG body kit with zero complaint.
After sending him $1,050 I received the product in 5 days. The only painting needed was the body color, white.

I bought my car in San Francisco but I am not in the States. The body kits and container weights roughly 180 pound. Shipping was US$70 from Shainghai to Taiwan, I pick up the parts from the port.
It will be $300 to $400 fee for freight shipping from Shainghai to one of the port in the west cost, Seattle, San Francisco, or LA. Depends on where you live, it will cost more from the port to your place.
