8 MPG on GL 550 around town

So, I've driven about 150 miles on my car, all around town with no speeds over 40mph.

I get 8.1 mpg.

Is that the norm?

I sure hope not.....it isn't even close to anything I've read anywhere.

What % is your Eco Display showing? If you don't know where it is, select the Trip menu in the multifunction display, and then scroll down to Eco Display.

Was surprised by this thread when I saw it yesterday as my mileage has been much better. It crossed my mind while I was stuck in some excruciatingly bad traffic this afternoon and I took a quick look at my trip info. I recently reset so unfortunately the "from reset" info is only based on last 500+ miles. That said, my last 500 has been almost entirely slow city driving and I'm showing 14.7 MPG at an average speed of 34 MPH. This afternoon's drive with the "from start" info includes being stuck at an extended near dead stop due to construction closure congestion during rush hour. Even with that, computer showed 12.4 MPG at 22 MPH average and 29% ECO. Best I ever got was a little more than 20 MPG on a long trip with a consistent open highway and no traffic. I would say my normal experience with balanced city/high driving has been in the 16-17ish range. Overall, I've been pretty pleased with the mileage performance. For frame of reference, mine is a '14 GL550, currently with approx 3,800 miles on the clock.

Mine has improved to 9MPG now. IT is still way crappier than I thought. I don't do jackrabbit start, or anything, very mellow driving. Kinda depressing. DRove around town for about 100+ miles, half a tank is gone.

I do think that is low. Are you just starting and stopping continuously? I'm getting about 15 in my 450 but that is in mixed urban/suburban driving. I used to get about 18 in my X164 diesel so I'm thrilled. Particularly so since diesel has been higher (about 15% more than premium) this summer than it has been since I purchased my X164 5 years ago. My fuel cost now is about 5% higher for a ton of additional power. Now if I did a lot of highway driving it would be a different story.

4,600 miles on 2014 GL550 with off road package (sport setting remaps throttle response, etc). According to readout, avg of 14.4 mpg over that time.

HOWEVER, I do keep it in Sport most of time so it is usually one gear lower than needed. Probably half highway-local is suburban local. On highway, with Distronic engaged I have had readings of 19.4 over about 80 miles.

Hope this helps

My god, I feel like i'm driving a different car, did they accidentally put a GL 63AMG engine in mine?

i tried a pure freeway the other day and I got like 12.5 max. in town if I drive like a grandma, at max I get 9.5.

I use distronics a lot, as long as there is a straightaway, I use it.

God, I hope it improves better, I feel like the car is eating more gas than I'm being fed a day in terms of the money spend on food. Its almost like the car is eating a super marbelized 48 oz. ribeye steak everyday from Morton steakhouse.

Distronic is bad for fuel economy. When ever I use it on mine the car applies way too much gas to get to speed.

JTSE - If your average was around 8-9 MPG and then you go on the freeway, you will need a lot of miles to get that up in to the upper teens. Try a freeway ride and hit reset on the From Start or From Reset and see what you get. You're not set to metric are you?

When you fill the car up with fuel, and get your mileage from the amount of fuel consumed, does it still come out this badly? I would try a couple of tankfulls and check the mileage this way. If it is still this bad, I would check with the dealer. It may be something weird, such a transmission that is not shifting properly.

My wife's GL550 has averaged 16.5 MPG over its 12,000 lifetime according to COMAND. She drives conservatively, never in Sport, uses Distronic+ a lot, and travels a mix of highway/urban driving.

No, I'm not set in metrics. If I am, I think the numbers would be better even.

I still get ~9.8 to 10.1 mpg these days no matter how much I control my driving to basically look like i'm moving my car without getting horned. Pretty crappy I have to say.

Can easily believe 16.5 avg if sport not used-just for laughs I reset mileage while on turnpike at 65 in histrionic-the reading stayed at 20.8 until I got bored and started to push it.

Something seems wrong. Have you done it manually to confirm? I think that's the first step. If it matches the computer, you know it's ok. Then it's time for a trip to the dealer.
