The GL is US production so wouldn't the US see the GLS first?

Would any GL owners consider the ML/GLE over the GL/GLS if it has a 3rd row option?

This was posted in another forum. This was taken from the 2016 GL DOG. I guess this means no GLS this year. Or as fabbrisd1 put it, the renaming is not tied to the facelift.

As a current ML owner, I would think not. The cargo area of the ML/GLE is perfect as it is now. Put a 3rd row back there and you would have no cargo room at all. The length of the current GL gives you some room behind the 3rd row. It's still not as big a difference as when going from a Tahoe to a Suburban and that's part of why the GL is still managable in city driving.

Most midsize crossovers with 3rd row have small cargo space and they don't really use the 3rd row 95% of the time. It's really just for those times when you to haul a few extra kids or small people somewhere. The GL rides too big and the GLE with a 3rd row would be a perfect car (size).

Don't ask me why I am so certain - my eyes will get gorged out. I'll come back to comment on this in a few weeks when all 3 points have become public knowledge.

tata.
Is the GLS still getting refreshed for delivery late summer, Shooter McGavin? Cause I've got a deposit down and would love to know if I'm proceeding or not (if no facelift)

Most GL owners have 3 or more kids or haul a lot of stuff/dogs etc. It would be rare for someone to own a GL and not have a need for the size. Really, it rides pretty small for a true 3 row full size SUV that weighs just a little under 3 tons. I would probably be driving an X5 if I didn't need a true full size SUV.

1st things 1st - GLS for 2016 is basically rebadge - and I don't care where some people think they are "seeing" the inside track.

Yes - there is a new "red" replacing Cinnabar, and yes - you will get "free" basic mBrace...

Golly gee willikers !

On the poster who asks about 3-row-ML, Mercedes has been there and tried that with W163 - for your interest I might suggest you research the "Metris" the badging for the US Vito, not the same but very interesting for some..

Not debating here, but in that sense, I do agree with you in that some families don't use the 3rd row 95% of the time. I had an Acura MDX for a lil over 2yrs before getting the ML. Only used the 3rd row a handful of times. Hence why I decided I did not need it this go around. Now, 3yrs later, I'm considering a 3 row suv as extended family travels with us more. I would need to use the 3rd row and have cargo space. The GL is the perfect size. I disagree with you in that it rides too big. Even my wife didn't feel the extra length driving the ML & GL back to back. Now a Sequoia, QX80, Yukon XL, those ride big. The GL doesn't.

We have both GL and ML in my family and I think the GL rides big, when compared to midsize suvs. It's too big for city driving. I have an Acura mdx for the past 7 years because it's a midsize with a 3rd row. I would get a ML right away if they offer 3rd row and I think it would steal a lot of sales from Acura MDX, Lexus Gx, Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60 etc.

I think I'm getting the new GLE when it comes out anyway unless the new Audi Q7 drives better.

Thanks Fab! I know you sit and grin watching this thread, having inside information but unable to share until 'public' while others declare knowledge. I enjoy speculation as much as anyone, but for those that don't follow the forum as much, you should consider this post from Fab as the gospel.

I had an ML500 (2003), now driving my second GL. I don't have any kids at home, have grandchildren across the country in Seattle area. My use of the 3rd row is almost zero. But when it's time for two couples to travel to Green Bay, pack luggage for an overnight stay, grill, cooler, warm clothes, lawn chairs, and table for a Packer tailgate party the GL cargo space is much better than the ML/GLE cargo space.

So "rebadging only" means there will be no refresh or facelift for 2016? Sorry but just want to be clear. Thanks

Fab, to be clear, are you saying MY16 will be rebadged as GLS with no refresh? The DOG posted above only says GL, not GLS.

I actually see it differently, I think this DOG confirms the GLS and the facelift will be released at the same time as a MY17. It looks to me the MY16 will continue to be badged as a GL, not a GLS. Or course none of this is official.

The DOG document posted above mentions only GL, nothing about GLS rebadging. Previous documents posted in this thread showed the GLS as a MY17. That is looking more and more likely. The question is, when will the GLS be available for order? The end of the this year or next?
The way I read Fab's post:

2016MY - Introduction of the GLS to replace the GL, rebadging, with new color and free MBRACE. Typical switch over in summer, on showroom floors in late summer/early fall.

2017MY - GLS with refresh. Uncertain yet what it will be, but in the past the previous years ML/GLE is a good indicator. Schedule yet TBD, some outside hints could indicate it will be an earlier release than typical summer switchover. IMHO, 2016 sales/inventory will influence 2017 schedule.

I'll be surprised if they rebadge the 2016 GL as a GLS with no refresh. And wouldn't the DOG shown above say GLS if that decision was already made?

Guys, the 2016 GL will be the same vehicle it has always been, the GL. The GLS won't be shown until Sept at the Frankfurt auto show (with the C Coupe, S Cabriolet and possibly the SLK to SLC facelift/change). That means it won't go on sale here in the U.S. until early 2016, making it a 2017 model. There always a 5-6 month lag between a car being presented at a show, and going on sale, especially a European auto show. 2017 is the year of the GLS and seriously doubt Mercedes would make the 2016 model a GLS with no changes.

Ouch. Calling me out.

Hey everyone, ignore all of my posts. They're only guesses on my part anyway. I have no "insider information". Simply basing my opinions on what I've read.

Best wishes.

My apologies, I didn't mean any disrespect, just trying to assert that Fab seems to be most 'inside' of MB and I don't think he'd state something on a public forum unless it was true.

Thanks for the compliments - but as this point MB is split decision - even split at that - DOG is GL - but badges are ready if they decide to reprogram the Kuka badge robot - infinite-running-meetings on just this - Executive Decision can be made to changeover as late as end-May....
