2024 GLS 580. Formerly 2015 GL 550, 2003 S430.
A rose by any other name is still a rose (according to Shakespeare); and a GL by any other name (such as GLS) is still a GL.

Point being, it doesn't matter if its called GL or GLS. What matter is the facelift, which will come out next summer as a MY17 model.

I think MB made a mistake releasing the GLE (M-Class) with the facelift. I cannot see them releasing a GLS without the facelift. I know based on what you said previously this will likely not be the case however, it just does not make sense. Perhaps part of the split involves this point as well.

When is the redesign do out, 2020?

Delivery in the fall I said, read my message properly - I have no indication this has changed.

I received the following email from my dealership today regarding the name change, confirming the name change and timeframe.

Upcoming Mercedes-Benz Name Changes

Your favorite Mercedes-Benz SUV (and one roadster) will soon be given a new moniker.

The first wave of these nomenclature changes will occur in model year 2016 (Calendar Year 2015). As the 2016 SUV models start rolling off the delivery trucks, you’ll notice that there will be no more familiar GLK’s, ML’s or GL’s. All 2016 Mercedes-Benz SUV names will begin with a “GL” (in honor of the iconic G-Class SUV).

The reason for this change is to create a simpler logic and more organized naming conventions for Mercedes-Benz vehicles in their respective categories. The logic behind the 3rd letter in the name is the core model. So, for example, the “GLK-Class” is based on the “C” core model, and hence will be renamed the “GLC-Class” in model year 2016.

Here is the list of the updated nomenclature for model year 2016:

Previous Name Core Model MY 2016 Name
GLK-Class C-Class GLC-Class
M-Class E-Class GLE-Class
GL-Class S-Class GLS-Class
SLK-Class C-Class SLC-Class

In addition to these Mercedes-Benz class name changes, there will also be new designations given to the engines. Goodbye BlueTEC®, and PLUG-IN-HYBRID, hello “d” for “diesel” , “e” for “electric”, “f” for “F-CELL” and “h” for HYBRID and BlueTEC® HYBRID. If you have any additional questions about these upcoming name changes, please feel free to contact us via our website or give us a call at (877) 226-3798.

Mistake? I'm still fairly new to MB (BMW FAN ) but look back to 2012. The all new ML was released for MY2012 and the new GL followed for MY2013. So it does make sense for the facelift GLE to be a MY2016 vehicle and the GLS to be a MY2017 vehicle. Wouldn't be unreasonable to see the same pattern for all new vehicles in the next 2-3 years. I think what everyone is tripping over is the MY15 to MY16 transition for the ML includes a name change as well as a facelift where as on the GL, it appears to only be a name change. Wouldn't be the 1st for a manufacturer to change names mid-cycle in a model. Infiniti changed their model names w/o any significant changes to many of their vehicles.

I guess this should put a lot of discussion to rest.

Thanks for sharing, makes some sense, better to change the whole SUV lineup nomenclature even if you don't have new features in some models.

Does anyone know, is the GLC changed for MY16? I've heard there's a new model coming, but don't know if it's a MY16 or MY17?

At least one MB dealer is claiming the GLC redesign is a 2016 coming later this year.

Knowing the facelift will now happen in 2017, I think I may buy now, either a 2015 (if I can find one with the right options) or a 2016.

Can a 450 be ordered with Active Curve or must one jump to the 550?

ok just wanted to confirm because it appears none of the dealer stock has this option. I'm assuming most special order this option and due to the cost its not an option on GL the dealer would have on the lot.

You are correct - and with "tight" production/inventory controls - a dealer can't just order a extra GL so they can demo this feature.

Like upgraded headlights - once you have expereinced Active Curve - you will never go back...

I've been following with interest this thread. Here in Australia, we have some limited editions on sale since Feb, as run outs - more extras included. It means existing demos & used are way overpriced.
I keep asking why pay more for a 1 year old 9000km demo when i can buy new or less?

any way the dealer said a new model 'GLS' will be in the showrooms 3rd quarter [September].She said full details will be known about 6-8 weeks before. She expects a few new dash mods - like the command screen & some exterior changes, hinted by the 'spy' shots. In her opinion I should wait to order the new updates unless I can get $20,ooo etc off a new one now.

We are going to wait...

I called the downtown Toronto benz dealership (Canada) and asked about any news regarding the GLS. This is what I've been told (called June 4th, 2015):

*Starting this fall (around Aug/Sept) you will start to see "GLS" show up on the roads, but the model will be identical to the 2015 GL, the only change will be the "GLS" on the back of the SUV. You can place orders now and take delivery this fall with their dealership today.

*Nothing is confirmed for the updated "facelifted" GLS, but they know it will be out next year. No confirmed news on when orders start or anything like that at all, but they do expect the interior to get updated like the GLE - just a matter of when.

If you are looking for a updated interior GLS and NOT just the "GLS" display on the back of your SUV, you will have to wait until next year

Just to be clear, there is another thread on a possible rebadge of the current design. Fab posted that MB may in fact rebadge the MY2016 as a GLS but that would not include the refresh. He further stated that the refresh will not be available until the MY2017 model year. The only question is when will MB begin to build the MY2017 GLS. Some indications are that could happen by the end of this year. All speculation but many web sites are pointing to the end of this year or early 2016 for the refresh MY2017 GLS to make its appearance. Time will tell.

I have a 13' GL350 and a 15' S550. The only thing that would make me a happy man would be to be able to order a facelifted GLS by the end of this year and take delivery by Jan/Feb 2016 *crosses fingers one can hope...*

If it is any consideration to the discussion, I hopped on a current order that was placed on Sept 3rd. My modifications to e.g. colour of leather changes, were made Oct 3rd. Production in Alabama to start late December and delivery to us here in Ontario, Canada to the dealership is January 24th and thus a few days after that will take possession. He claimed that they have ordered 4 total and that with the "piggy back" being one month out was modifiable - mine was the oldest of the orders. He did say that our - and other three- orders would not come with the redesigned interior/bigger screen like the ML he showed us.

Again, FWIW.
