GL year recommended?

GL year recommended?
We currently have a ML 320 year 2002. It has been a great car, but are looking for something bigger now. Are there particular years recommended/ or to be avoided for the GL? what about the desil vs. gas? We have "heard" some things, but are curious about additional input...

2013 and above since it's the new body style. The older ones can be had at a great discount if that is more important.
Mine has been bulletproof, and if something did go wrong, covered under warranty (timing belt TSB due to engine chatter at startup, smell from AC - they disinfected the evaporator coil).

GL 350
We have a 2012 GL 350 (Diesel). In 3 years of ownership and over 30 K miles, it has been flawless. I prefer to buy last model year vehicles (2012 was the last year for the first generation GL; The second generation GL came out in 2013). as they tend to be more reliable (most issues are fixed at the end of a long 6 year production cycle). We also got almost 11K off the sticker price. I understand that this is completely subjective, but we liked the exterior and interior of the first generation GL better. I also recommend the Diesel. We get 20 MPG in city driving (granted, we are in a small town), and 25 MPG in highway driving. Also, if you tow, Diesel would be better. These are just our personal preferences, and the 2nd generation GL (and the gasser variant) is a great vehicle as well.
