Cracked Windshield and Insurance Problem
However, an hour later my insurance called to tell me that the shop couldn't do the job and I need to find a new auto glass shop. I asked her why and she said she did not know. I called the shop and the guy said my insurance will not pay more than $900 and the OEM windshield already costs them $900. He told me that my insurance did not even negotiate the price with them, so they just cannot do it.
Has anyone experienced this kind of problem? What do I do if I go to a new shop and they also cannot replace the windshield for $900? I do have windshield coverage with $50 deductible. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much!
The glass is dealer/MB item - it is not available non-MB from aftermarket.
This is a question on your insurance coverage for windshield - starting with the dealer quote in hand.
Yes - this like this come up with windshield replacement on all models - all the time - because who really knows the coverage provided under your exiting policy if you haven't had a broken windshield claim before ?
That said - when buying a new or pre-owned MB - the dealer will offer/have several different windshield add-on plans available - that fill any gap (or 0 coverage) for windshield replacement.
Hope this helps - starting Monday you can get the dealer quote and then talk with your insurance company.

$900 was paid by the insurance company.
BTW, the dealer just calls a glass company to do the job. Dealer employees, themselves, don't do that type of work unless your dealer is different from pretty much all others. Still, if something doesn't go well I'd rather be complaining to my dealer about bad work from the glass company they hired than have to complain to the very same glass company that I hired directly.

I read some positive feedbacks about Safelite glass, gave them a call, they work with insurance directly, I got Progressive. Progressive refused to pay $900 for OEM windshield, but would pay around $450 for aftermarket. In Florida no deductible. Then I called Progressive, ended up almost with nothing (lowered rate for $15 bucks per month though), they said they will cover $450, then whatever left is on me. I did not want to spend $450 and agreed on aftermarket widnshield.
BTW nobody could tell what is the real difference between good aftermarket glass and original.
So I gave Safelite green light for replacement.
1-st attempt failed, it was raining.
2-nd attempt failed - cracked replacement.
3-nd attempt failed - wrong windshield (for car without rainsensor) (are there X166 without rainsensor?!)
4-nd attempt - success - with original OEM windshield from local dealer. The guy could not explain what was really happened but something worked out between Safelite and local MB dealer.
I'll also give + to Safelite, not quick but at the end I got what I was looking for.
