Smoke smell - does it go away?
Hello,
Im considering purchase of a used '13 GL550 and has everything that Im looking for. Only thing hold me back is that the previous owner was a smoker, the dealer is telling me that they are doing all the detailing & will get "most of the smell" out. And over time the smell should go away completely.
We are non-smokers and my concern is that will the smell every go away completely? Not to blame my wife here, but she does have a very sensitive nose and really doesn't like smell. Don't want to end up with an expensive rig and an upset wife
Any one had any previous experience like this? Will greatly appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Keep looking.
It will get "better" but it will never really go away even after a deep cleaning so your dealer is technically correct as they can get "most of the smell" out.
So if your wife has a sensitive nose that is not the GL you are looking for.

Once the detailing is done take your wife and if she still feels no the smell exists then leave it..But honestly once the woman gets negative about something it will be very hard for them to agree on same issue. My 2 Cents.

Most detailers aren't really equipped - they can do a good cleaning - but common if overdone to have leftover masking/smell.
Frankly - I have had very/very good success - with a "ionizer" - such as this one - left in the vehicle overnite with sunroof/windows cracked open - followed by a wipe down the following day after treatment.

If the smoke smell is there now and you know it..............it'll NEVER go away. Even if it does.........your mind tells you that this car smells like smoke.

Tell the dealer to get the smell out and then you'll decide whether to buy it. A salesman telling you that they'll get most of the smell out and the rest of it will go away "eventually" is such a load of BS that it is laughable. On the other hand, I can't think of any reason a salesman would lie to you. Sheesh.
A buddy had a dealer tell him the same load of crap and guess what, the car still stinks. Years ago, I got in the (really smelly) car of an acquaintance and saw an open bag of charcoal in the back seat. I asked what was up with the charcoal and the person told me that the salesman said it would get rid of the cigarette stench. Wow. I didn't know such gullible people really existed.
The car stinks. It will always stink. Think about it, the fabric or leather of the seats, the carpets, the headliner and anything else that is not metal or plastic is permeated with the awful stench and absent a thorough cleaning, it will never go away. Even the felt on the inside of the glove box and the center console will reek of butts. And what dealer is going to carefully clean everything, including the headliner, glove box, center console and every square inch of carpet?

Thank you for all the suggestions....When we went and looked at the car we could barely smell it. Dont know if it was actual smell or our mind imagining it. Anyways we decided not to go for it.
