how important is 50k service? or what items are important in 50k service?

i had bought my 14' GL550 at 47k miles. it's still in 48's but i'm wondering if full 50k service is necessary (mind that the car has been properly serviced at MB dealer by previous owner).
first of all, i'm thinking to go to MB licensed mechanic for lower service cost. but looking at the list of items in 50k mile service, many of them can be done by myself. would it be a bad idea to do selective services by mechanic and rest by me? FYI, i haven't gotten quotes from dealer or mechanic yet.

If you can - I'd buy the pre-paid maintenance, you'd probably come out ahead with the services that are coming up.

50,000 Service

A 50,000 service is a biggie since it requires spark plug change at least thats the way it is on my 2015 ML350. I do what I call is a "al carte" service. I look at what the service manual requires to check and then I figure out what really needs to be checked. I decide what needs to be checked. ie , I can check the windshield wipers, etc. Basically, just have them do the actions that require parts, ie oil change, combo air /charcoal filter, air filters etc.

If you want to go with the Mercedes service plan, ie pre-paid maintenance call Taffel motors and speak to Jeff Jackson, he will give you the best price and explain it in detail. I don't have his number but many have used him on this site. Just search this site for Pre-paid maintenance..

Also, Mercedes has a maintenance discount of $150 dollars off any maintenance performed costing over $250 before 15 Jun.

You are correct, they changed it to 50,000 in 2015. Also the 2014 Maintenance manual has a recommended and required sections whereas the 2015 and up just has one maintenance. Not sure why , the same engines etc.

2017 C43 - Spark Plugs need to be changed at 50K miles per dealer, Fletcher Jones Mercedes-Benz in Newport Beach. Quoted $580 before a 10% discount, for all 6 spark plugs and install. Final price should be around $525.
