Hot console '14 GL450

Here's a strange one. Just spent a grueling 2 hours driving from south of Houston to north of Houston. Heavy rain. Wipers on full blast almost the whole trip. 1/2 L bottle of Propel in the drivers side cup holder with the cooling feature turned on (worked well). With about 15 mins to go in the drive, I happened to put my hand down next to the console and it was uncomfortably hot. Pass side was lukewarm. Inside of console was warm. Got into the garage and shot the temp with an infrared gun. 91 F. Waited a few mins and did it again with my phone in hand to record it. Side of console was 87.5. Chrome strip was 84. Short somewhere?

I had an '85 Toyota van that routed an a/c line thru the console and would actually make ice in a little tray while supplying the rear air.. I thought the MB system might be similar. In any case, thank you for the info.

Good to meet another H Town fellow! My 2013 450 felt warm in the cubby beneath the AC controls. not sure why, I have not investigated enough.

It's an option. See instructions from OM attached.

Check the air registers at the rear of the console, which bring air to the rear passengers. On my W166 2017 GLE350, the console gets quite warm when cabin heat is being used, unless the console registers are closed. When the registers are closed, the console is the same temperature as the front cabin area.

If the registers are open, the warm air flowing through the registers heats the the console.

I am not on board with the idea that the cup heater / cooler is the cause. The cup heater/cooler, while nice, has little heat transfer capability.

Thank you. On way out now. Will check registers, fire up (pun intended) cup holder and report.

Yesterday's tests were inconclusive. Trips were short. BUT, I did notice that the rear a/c was on auto, set to 72°. Outside temp was was around 60°. I'll try again today with the rear a/c off.

Not inconclusive. 72 deg set point will bring warm air into the rear passenger area, with 60 degree ambient temperature. Try again with the rear HVAC completely closed and deactivated.
