Another Tire Option for 295/40r21..Yokohama Geolander X-CV

my two front DWS06s are worn down mostly even, but more on the inside (steel belts showing), approx 24k miles. When I last checked about 1k miles ago I didn't notice aggressive wear or steel showing at that point. The ride and performance has been very consistent and no vibrations throughout its life (until now, that's what prompted me to check and found its worn exponentially on the inside). I am very satisfied with these DWS06s. But recent discussions about the new Michelins got me looking at those..but the 500 wear rating got me searching to see if there are other choices. Bought these Yokohama X-CV (520 wear rating, $272) yesterday from Tire Rack and got it today, and will have Discount Tires (they didn't have these in stock) mount it today.
Initial impressions when I carried it into the garage to load in the GL: these feel very soft and pliable, the carcass isn't as rigid as I remembered how the DWS06's construction was. I hope that doesn't translate to squishy cornering and transitions. It also felt a few pounds lighter. We'll see later today when it's mounted.

24k miles is absolutely outstanding out of the DSW's. I don't expect to get more than half of that out of my Conti CrossContact UHP's. Since these trucks absolutely destroy tires quickly, I'm going for the cheap option for the next set. So I'll be giving these a shot. Customer comments online have been very positive:

I got around 10k from my Conti's on the rear of my GL63. Replaced them with a set of Federal Couragia F/X. So far, I'm really impressed with them considering they had such a low price point.

Wasn't able to go to Discount Tire today, will have to be tomorrow.

While searching, I noticed there were a bunch of budget brands, but they all appear to have very low wear ratings in the 200s. One stuck out (and I was going to purchase, the Delinte DS8 $180, which has 460-500 wear and AA Traction/Temp) but was on backorder for a month.

Just took a family trip to Great Wolf Lodge for the weekend and put on an additional 600 miles...so got about 900 miles on these Yokohamas so far. PSI set at 36 front 37 rear, and noted increase 3-4 PSI once warmed up and stayed consistent 39f/41r after several miles. 95mph stretches are smooth and easy. Initial overall impressions are excellent so far- very quiet, responsive to input (does not feel squishy as I'd thought), great traction/grip on various driving surfaces including moderate rain. Previous tires (OEM Pirelli and Conti DWS06) hydroplaned and got squirrelly very easily going any faster than 55 in Houston rainy seasons...even when brand new.
Will see how it fares after 10k miles...

v6pwr, now that you probably had more time to evaluate Geolandar X-CV tires, what are your impressions regarding:
1. the wear (as compared to DWS 06)
2. specifically dry spirited handling (as compared to DWS 06)
3. hydroplaning resistance and traction in heavy rain conditions (as compared to DWS 06)?

I'm down to a choice between X-CV and DWS06 (in 295/35-21 size for W166ML63) and your input is very much appreciated. TIA.

I have about 2800 miles on them so far, and I am happy with them, so far. I cannot speak to tire wear as they are basically still new at 2800 miles...I'll chime in again when I hit about 15k miles. What I noticed physically with the tire's structure is that the tread width doesn't go out all the way to the edge of the tire wall (you can kind of see this in the picture I posted, where there's a tapering in effect from the side wall to the edge of the tread versus the Contis where the tread stretches over the full length and squared with the side wall)..so I don't know if the carcass/side wall is 295 with narrower tread width, or 295 tread width on a wider carcass/side wall.

As for dry handling, I am surprised that these Yokos feel planted/solid when taking tight turns, contrary to the tire's rubber compound and carcass feeling soft. To me, the Contis felt a little "squirmy" around corners. Tire noise seems to be quieter with the Yokos as well...but, it's still new, so I can't really say if it's going to stay like this.

Wet handling is where this tire beat the others hands down. Since I got the these Yokos, it's rained quite a bit..even had bad flooding in certain areas around me. No slipping, no hydroplaning like with the Conti and Pirelli. Previously, I was afraid to go near 60mph when it rained as hydroplaning was guaranteed. I even thought it was probably due to the GL's structure/weight, and not so much the tires' fault. BUT, after having these Yokos, I can say it was because those tires just plain suck in the rain.

I have the tire's PSI lowered to 33F/34R at the moment and it still feels solid like when I had it higher initially.

Thank you, v6pwr. While I expected outstanding wet traction and hydroplaning resistance (just the new thread depth of almost 12/32 gives these tires a tremendous advantage vs 10/32 tires), I was concerned that 12/32 deep thread depth will compromise dry handling. Thank you for helping to put my dry concerns to bed. Since I will use lower profile tires (35 for ML/GLE vs. 40 for GL/GLS) this alone should measurably help dry handling too. Thank you for posting this very useful info.

Appreciate the review as we will be looking in the spring for a new set. Are yours installed on a 550? Thanks.

Thanks for the review, timely for me as I need to look into new tires .. I have Hankook Ventus, and while modestly priced, they wear quickly.

Thanks for the review..I am up for tires again as well. I have been very pleased with the last set, Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S Plus ($302 each). Wear was very even and the tires have been really quiet up to now, which is basically to the wear bars and I was not disciplined with rotations. I do have a good indy who is meticulous with alignments, however. I am tempted to stick with the Pirelli tires again just because I know I like them and they are now at 35,000 miles which is mind boggling for this truck, but the Yokohamas look promising.

I would stay with Pirelli Scorpion(not to be confused with Verde) Zero A/S Plus as it is better tire than Yoko X-CV in every regard and condition with lone exception being off roading(which X-CV is slightly better in due to much deeper thread) and maybe in snow(which of course is not a concern in FL).
