Some may recognize my username from the X164 forums. I had a GL350 and was a guinea pig for some emissions deletes and tunes. Anyway, I bought a 2013 GL450 with 91k miles and I absolutely love it! It’s just amazing how this car rides and feels like a feather on the road and it’s smooth and powerful.
But, I have one concern as I’m new to the gasser world (seriously, the GL350 was my first car). I’ve been pushing the 450 hard for the past 24 hours and am starting to realize that the exhaust stinks like there’s no catalytic converters and it rattles for like 2 seconds when I start it and when I rev it sometimes. I’ve even had the CEL come on twice but when I scan it it doesn’t come up as anything so I clear it. Is it just bad catalytic converters and not like a timing chain issue?

Early x166 GLs (which most 2013 ones fall into) had an issue with timing chain tensioners being starved of oil on startup, which would result in a short period of rattle. The solution is to install an updated tensioner and two new check valves. There was a TSB for it.
I’ll check the service history via the Dealership soon. CarFax showed the car was taken in every 5k miles and had all the 10k services done. It may not be the chain because it didn’t rattle on a cold start this morning like my OM642 used to do all the time. I’m not ruling this out though. But the exhaust does stink at idle.
