Battery longevity

2014 GL built April 2014 with 70k miles on the clock, so batteries are 5.5 years old. How many of you are still on your original batteries? If you've replaced them, did you do so at the dealer at what cost? Thanks.

Mine completely died all of a sudden this past spring. Original battery in a '13 GL550, built in December 2012, with 65k miles on the odo. So, i got about 6 years of use on mine. One day driving fine, and without any warning, the next day the GL all of a sudden couldn't even crank over. I bought a new battery at Advance Auto down the street for about $150, connected jumper cables from it to the positive connection under the red sliding cover under the hood, and the negative clamp to the grounding post mounted on the fender frame. I had to do this to slide the front passenger seat all the way forward to gain access the the battery compartment underneath to change it out..the original battery was so weak I couldn't move the seat.
For first time battery change, the carpet has to be cut to gain access to the battery compartment underneath...this is normal. Just google or search youtube vids on changing battery and you'll see what I'm talking about. Probably something you can do yourself if you are a little bit mechanically inclined, and save quite a bit of money.

I'm still on my original 2013 battery. The dealer quoted me around $450. They've asked to change it for the past 3 years.

5 years is a general rule of thumb. Beyond 5 years all of my vehicles over the past 20 years have exhibited noticeable degradation in starting. How quickly performance drops off after 5 years depends on both vehicle and battery model, and usage.

I concur but my last couple of ML's batteries only lasted 3 years.

I left my key in the ignition by accident today for about 3hrs with my radar detector on (boy do I miss Push to Start). That scenario finished off my battery. I'm right at 80k miles.

Using MB roadside eliminates the dealer labor cost to install a new battery, FYI. ($270 including tax).

Still on my original battery. 1/2013 build date and 140,000 miles. Has shown no signs of weakening but will probably be replaced this year just out of precaution.

Oh yeah, the MB roadside guy said that batteries last longer on MB vehicles that drive 800 miles or more per month.

Our dealership ran a special on battery replacement so we replaced both this week. Our 2015 GL550 was built in March 2015 so our batteries were about 4.5 years old. No evidence that they were degraded, but didn’t want to run the chance as we head into another Winter.

To all who have responded, thank you. I have MB $150.00 coupons for each car good till Oct. 31. Dealer wants $345.00 installed, so the coupons bring the price down to the cost of one from an auto parts store. Service adviser said the aux batts last longer so I'm not changing them out. The dealer is running all kinds of service specials this month. Brakes, tires, 10% off A and B services. So I'm going to wait to see if they put batteries on sale during October.

All the more reason we changed our batteries. Our driving is predominately local, low-speed and with frequent shutdowns and startups. We accumulate only about 7,000 miles per year ... far less than 800 miles per month.

I use "Batter Tenders" from Costco for my stored vehicles and mowers in the winter. I may just meet the 800 a month mileage.

It is not the 800 miles per month distance. Your battery will be fine if you drive 60 miles twice per week on the highway without stopping. Its about the length of the drive which allows your alternator to recharge the battery.
