2015 GL350 BlueTEC - Engine Temperature

Wondering if anyone has ever noticed the temperature needle in their Diesel engine Benz. I’m assuming it drives hotter than gasoline engines but how much hotter?

I recently noticed mine was running at around 10 while city driving. Since it only goes upto about 15, I thought it was too hot. Any ideas?

I’ll keep monitoring and try to post pictures.

Please post a photo of the temperature indicator needle when it is too hot, in your view.

As long as the temp is stable, and not at the redline you are fine---there's a thermostat that regulates the cooling system to maintain a constant optimum temperature.

If you are seeing wild changes in temp once the engine is warm, or extremes (hot or cold), then that could indicate an issue that requires more troubleshooting.

p.s. my USA-spec GL350 temp gauge is in Celsius and the engine is usually regulated around 90C. (The engine is still cold in the attached photo.)

Thank you for that information, it sounds like I have nothing to worry about as mine runs at around 90 also.

I was initially worried because I thought most auto manufacturers design the temperature gauge so that the engine operates at around the middle, which would be 80 in this case. When I saw it go past the halfway point I was starting to worry but I guess it’s normal.

Normal. M-B has a different approach to user interface compared with other carmakers, examples include the temperature gage noted above, and the HVAC fan settings. Very different experience, depending on what brand is being compared vs. M-B.

Standard thermostat keep engine at about 89-91 degrees. That is normal working temp.
Under heavy load it can go 95-100 - by heavy i mean all the way to the floor.
