2013 Gl550 front struts replacement
Hello all
my 2013 gl550 with 110k miles has been experiencing problem with the suspension stuck in Sport for the last 5k miles or so. The local dealer said the front left shock is bad. $2200 to replace.
So being a diy guy I’ll attempt to tackle this job myself. From the way it looks::
remove the air hose
3 bolts on top
1 bolt on bottom
couple electrical connectors
anyway, before I’m knee deep in the project I’ll thought I check with the forum to see any special steps I need to be aware of. Thank you and wish me luck.

WIS says the Airmatic system needs emptied, using the Star diagnostic system. Do you have this setup? Cables + multiplexer + pad or laptop
The tie rod and stabilizer bar connections to the steering knuckle need to be removed, in addition to the driveshaft (half shaft).
Also says part of the fender liner needs to come out.
Having eyes on the parts, you will be able to see the mechanics of what must come out, vs. what would be nice, but not required.
The main question for me is how to empty Airmatic without damage. The rest is wrench turning and generally DIY parts removal.

Strut Replacement
Just did it a few weeks ago. Not particularly hard but make sure you have the right sizes wrenches and sockets. The Arnott instructions are spot on. Bilstein also have a good video on line as well. Hardest part was busting the axle nut free. I would recommend the Arnott Units and Rock Auto has them for a very good price and in stock I do believe. I had a x164 that I replaced all the air suspension with Arnott and put 100k on them and they were great No issues and rode just like factory. I am not sure the air system needs to be emptied. I jacked my X166 up this summer and the bags deflated by themselves. There is probably something in the valve block which will release air at certain heights/levels.
