2014 gl550 has high performance summer tires
is it bad idea to drive this car to a location where it can fall below freezing with 1-3 inches of snow on the way?
i have researched why it is a bad idea. is it better than taking front wheel drive small sedan like prius?

High performance summer tires do not perform well in snow/ice. The positive is you have AWD. If the FWD prius has winter tires, I would probably drive that one. 5,000 lbs and tires that won't grip well on snow/ice is a bad idea.

Unless there is another compelling reason, take the Prius. We "learned" how to drive in the snow, in cars that you actually had to drive (no power brakes, manual trans, etc.) You learned that what ever direction the car was pointing is the direction it would keep going if you stepped on the brakes, regardless of what you did with the steering wheel. Sometimes we'd use the emergency brake to act like an anchor on the rear of the car but still maintain some steering. And there were fewer cars in general. Today? I'd be loathe to go out in snow. I can still drive in it. I'd be using the paddle shifters all the time to avoid braking. I'd make sure I could see out of every corner of every window. But with the way folks drive today, nothing would protect me from someone who hadn't got a clue about how to adjust for conditions. We've all seen videos and photos of pileups in snow. All it takes is one goofball......
