2011 GL450
GL450 intermittent start issue

I’m extremely frustrated with a start issue on our 2011 GL450. I have done what a lot of you guys have said and that is search through the forums because there’s plenty of information. But I have not found a situation the same as mine. I have taken it to my Indy Beamer Mercedes shop that has worked on my car for years and they can’t figure it out either. There are no codes that show up. The problem is that it will start perfectly fine for a month or week or even a day or two and then all of the sudden not start. It will not crank and it will not make any sound at all other than the normal sounds you hear just before the engine starts. Everything works on the inside electronically. The battery is new. This morning I started it and then tried to start it again this afternoon it wouldn’t start. Based on the history, if I wait an hour or 12 hours or a day or three days it will eventually start again no problem like totally normal. my Indy shop thought maybe it was the solder connections on the EIS, but they said they all looked good. The last time this happened before this last episode, it started no problem for about 5 months straight. This has been going on for about two years. Any help or direction greatly appreciated.

Maybe a loose or corroded ground cable somewhere.

Yes check ground points for corrosion. Check under front carpet and under spare tire area for signs of water infiltration. Replace aux battery.

Does your dash indicators swipe around? If so - check your brake pedal sensor.

Does it start if you insert the key and turn it, as opposed to the keyless go?

Mine does that occasionally, but if I insert the key it works fine.

GL450 2012 Weird Startup/Crank Issue

2012 GL450 V8
Batteries are verified good..
Starter is verified good.
Will not crank sometime.
Observation: by swapping H and E or D, it will start/crank. I can drive it again.
Gray relay H E and D relays are verified good.
What it could be? Your experience on this issue/s are highly appreciated. Thanks

Define good relay? Burned contact pair inside sometime will work and sometime won't. Just buy new relay.

relays has been changed and verified by a relay tester and pulled out relays from other GL450.

ISM Disabling start ??

You say "no code"... that's a short straw for us 😳

Next time this happen , test your ISM !
Here is how:
  1. turn ignition ON
  2. Press brake pedal
  3. Try to Shift out of P into R, N, D back and forth a couple times....

If shifter operates, then module OK, else repair needed.

This shifter module is built with unsoldered tiny circuit board connections that oxidize when moisture penetrate through loose harness connector seals. It is involved with car parts authentication.

When bad, a tow truck may be your best option after you try this last chance steps :

1-- Try a key cycle like done during limp-modes ordeals
2-- Try a car Reboot with battery Out for 20mn

Scan again in hope of getting a fresh clue or a "pending code" in the making.

i have a similar issue, in my case new battery aswell, checked fused, had ecu reflashed, at first my battery would drain, then after reflash it does not drain, but now i get the message to tak car to shop without shifting gears and also had in the past all the lights in my instrument cluster light up. i noticed that when i disconnect the batter for like 5 mins, then reconnect, it will start up and run for a while, then in a day or two it wont crank again. So frustrating. Last time i got it scanned also no definitive code showed up.

My siternlaws 2010 ML550 is also experience same issues. I have over 167k miles and the ML has around 180k.

​​​​​​... that does sound like your ISM needs attention. Tiny oxidized solderless connections are creating marginal communications, as designed.

After a "battery reboot" module is good until fault count positively concludes it is marginal.

You need a new unit professionally SCN'd -Or simply send yours out for reconditioning, then no programming necessary.

Thank you! The hunt continues. TOday the batter is drained now. So something is messing things up bad.

The smart fuse box acts as a power manager to energize circuits nased on needs.

When networked communications become unreliable, part of the car stays awake and a collection modules drain the battery non-stop.

To add insults to injury, this old common issue is not even easy to track down. One module can bring down it's own string of peers.

Each module is built to fail in more than one way and many modules can trigger this chaos.... sadly the opposite of redundancy.

MB techs who replace the same modules all day long develop a short list of worst offenders.... ISM
