hose fitting broken in the piece of it felt in the water pump

GL450 2014 X166 : I got a sever leak from top of water pump, pipe fitting broke, the pipe (approximately 7 mm plastic pipe) goes from the top of water pump back to the coolant tank) it holds with a screw, was broken on both side ( the side which goes in the rubber hose and the side which is pushed in the water pump...... by taking off a little part of the fitting fell in the water pump ( a plastic peace of 6 mm diam 2mm thick) would it be necessary to taking off the whole water pump?.......any advice?......thanks

If you can't see the broken piece, and remove it, the risk is that the piece will lodge in a cooling passage and reduce or block coolant flow. The piece could lodge itself anywhere in the cooling system: cylinder head, engine block or radiator. Also possible that the broken piece damages the water pump impeller, which could reduce coolant flow.

I would remove the water pump housing and be 100% sure the broken piece is removed.

p.s. You have a 164 and this is the 166 section.

Thanks for your reply,
To clarify, I don't have the the X164 anymore , now my car is a x166, but I am not familiar with MBworld and didn't think about changing my profil. I will try to find out how to change it

You understood exactly what happened to me and to remove the water pump was also my first thought, however it scares me , it looks to be a difficult and painful task......is it? do you have any advice, or a link to some documentation......I can't find any for the X166 water pump

I thought there is maybe a way to access inside the pump housing by only removing the thermostat, but I think the little piece of plastique is on the other side of the impeller

Thanks again

I wouldn't worry about it. Too small to cause issues and will be chopped by impeller.

I agree it's a very little piece of plastic and once in the radiator it will stay in and can't cause any damage, but if I am unlucky it can stuck and block the impeller which I guess is plastic, and I don't know how large are the flow passage in the engine and head, I guess some canals can be very small......I don't know.

That piece of plastic is fragile as f..... Your impeller is not a plastic, it is composite. Passages are big. I mean if you have money to waste go ahead.

Got it !!! but you are right the piece of plastic was very fragile and brittle. Once I took it of I almost could crush it with my fingers. but I was lucky and it can help to an other one to know how I recovered it. I had just to take off the thermostat housing, and found an opening from the pump to engine, the piece was inside, I could see it only with a snake inspection camera, but I couldn't reach it with my fingers, so I located it with the snake camera and I pushed it toward the pump exit with a screw driver from the upper hole ( where the piece felt in). Without the snake camera there should be a second option by pouring water through the upper hole and flushing, piece should come out from the pump with the water, but there is a second hole in the bottom of the pump, I closed it with paper towel to be sure the plastic can't fall in and I would have place a screen under the pump to be sure the plastic came out......In the mean time I learned that Mercedes decided to use biodegradable plastic ( democrat friendly) for several coolant fitting on their car..... just crazy.....all these fittings becomes brittle and break one after one (80K miles), you just have to touch it, two other fitting broke on the same line just by taking off the thermostat in despite I was very cautious, even the thermostat housing ( plastic !!!!) showed signs of sever plastic deterioration so I replaced it (part 278-200-06-15 $190 advance auto parts V/S $350 by mercedes .....just the part) as well as the whole overflow line with new fittings ( part A1665001091 $29 amazone V/S $125 by mercedes)
Hope this can help someone...... anyway thanks for your help.
