Basic 4Matic on the beach

In case anyone wonders how the basic 4Matic GL (no off-road package) does in the sand - I took my son fishing to Fort Fisher beach in NC in our 2013 GL450 last weekend. It did just fine, not only on the hard packed sand near the water line, but also in the soft sand all the way up near the dunes. Didn't even need to air down, just lifted the suspension. Street tires, 275/50/r20 at 42 psi. Got a small air compressor just for the peace of mind for future trips, in case I ever need to air down.

So yes, in case you want to try your GL out in the sand - it does great!

Those are great pictures! I don't think you would ever need to air down the tires on the sand. It was needed on many cars and trucks in past decades when they had narrow tires, sometimes just 2wd, and didn't have traction control. But the GL already has wide tires with a big contact patch, and with 4matic it should be just fine. Having a small air compressor is smart though, even just to put some extra air in a leaky tire to get you back into town.

Nice photos!
wow 42 psi, I kind of remember the door jamb tag says 33 psi for the tires. I usually put 36 psi in the tires for everyday driving.

Nice pics. Agree that 4MATIC is very capable.

I have taken my GLE up steep ruttted mountain roads in Colorado and never doubted the vehicle’s abilities.

Ya know, if you would have had a beer in your hand instead of baiting a hook, this would have a picture to frame and mount on the wall in my office!!

Thanks. I drive on the highway a lot and like the way the GL rolls at higher tire pressure. Also roads here in NC are a lot better than what I was used to back in NJ. There I kept the tires at 36-38 psi.

I took mine to Pismo beach in California. Aired down and drove up the soft sand, up and down inclines. The kids enjoyed it.

I also bought this 4-wheel inflation/deflation set. Just $40 and makes airing down/up a lot easier. Tried it on my recent trip to the beach and it works great.
