'14 GL450 - Mercedes letter - emissions warranty extension
I received a letter from Mercedes today stating that for 2013-2016, they are extending the coverage for the exhaust valve assembly to 10 years, 120,000 miles. Reason given: The exhaust valve assembly might not work properly and result in an engine misfire and potential illumination of the check engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp ('MIL').
I've googled and looked at WIS and EPC. There's not a valve assembly inline with the exhaust manifold or pipes, so is this really as simple as it sounds and it is referencing the exhaust valves/spring/seals/etc? Is there a problem with them that I haven't seen mentioned here before?
In its entirety, the letter covers 2011-2012, and alsot CL/CLS/S/E/ML/SL/G/GL/GLE with V8 engines.
The valve seat wears and it begins to lose compression.
ECU compensates with more fuel but sometimes it will trigger a code and sometimes the cylinder will cut out entirely.
I just got my GL back from this, the entire cylinder head and assorted parts were replaced under warranty.

do you guys happen to know what codes are associated with this issue. I just dropped my GL this morning because of the check engine light been on and the car driving heavy. It acts as if it had no power. A quick scan shows misfire on cylinder 5. Hopefully is the same issue and it is cover under the extended warranty. Thanks...

I would always see this one. The injector couldn't be adjusted enough to overcome the loss of compression.
I had a CEL a while back but it went away after replacing spark plugs.
Currently, it has no CEL on, would the dealer be willing to do something if I bring it in?
The engine is burning quite a bit of oil though - almost 1 quart every 500 miles - could it be caused by this?

Im not sure what they look for exactly to determine if this is related to the extented warranty or not. I had an update from the service advisor telling me that i have lots of things going on with GL and that is not related to the part that got the extented warranty. Im waiting for the high punch 👊 on repairs.

Hmmm that is strange, which scanner are you using? I wonder if there was a new type of code another scanner is required to pick up.
Got an update from the service advisor. Apparently the misfires are being cause by oil in the main engine hardness. They need to replace it along with the camshaft sensors and solenoids. For all the labor and parts, they are charging me 4,800 + tax. I've seen some threads in the forums about this issue before. Im waiting for an actual write-up to see a full list of everything getting replaced. Wondering if this price sounds reasonable to you guys. Thanks...
