So my 2013 GL450 is at 192K miles and I figured I'd replace the alternator preemptively.

Just for reference, here's what the brushes on the voltage regulator and the corresponding copper shaft looked like. Brushes were at 2-3mm. So if your GL is getting to that mileage, I'd say it's time to replace at least the voltage regulator.
