2014 GL 450, $6,767.02 Repair Bill
Hey All,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Posting because I am in a dilemma. Bought a pre-owned 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL 450 in 2018, with all the premium bells and whistles in options.
Drove like a dream until November '23. Engine started making knocking sounds and would still make a noise after being turned off for a good 5 mins.
Got it checked out by a Mercedes-Benz technician and he said it was the camshaft and camshaft gears. Given the car has 110,500 miles on it, I did not know what to do and left it on the driveway.
Now, I got a diagnostic done by a Mechanic Shop specializing in German Cars, in NY.
They just got back to me with a $6,767.02 estimate, which does not include the potential for finding something more wrong with the camshaft once they further unassembled it (attachment).
Is this a normal occurrence with this model or did I not do something preventative? Given the KBB, what you all recommend as the best course go action?
Thank You, I really appreciate all the help!

166 motor
I have not heard a lot of good things about the Turbo motors and resell prices reflect that. I personally prefer a non turbo 550 motor.
Should move this to the X-166 forum. If you are mechanically inclined you might want to take on the job and save the $4400 in labor or at least find a hood Indy shop and get some quotes. good luck and follow the link below and you will find there are many losing engines after perfect maintenance history .

That sounds like Dieseling or engine run-on. Google that and see if that sounds like yours. If so, I doubt a timing chain adjuster repair would fix that.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. Unless he's talking about run-on after shut-off, I don't see how non-moving mechanical parts can make noise. I don't know if that quote was made based on the dealer's prior "diagnosis" but I suspect it must have been.

I'd bet that price quote is a work of fiction. The mechanic was probably thinking, no way will the customer take me up on this, so I'll just make something up.

Good point unless the ignition system keeps running somehow.

Noise for 5 minutes after shut down most likely is aux water pump evening "hot spots" on the engine. Can you give better description?
The attached estimate is for timing rebuild. MB engines don't just wear out at 110 kmiles, so I would definitely do 2nd opinion.

Interesting
I am very interested in this thread. Having been through an engine replacement, diagnosis that was one of the earliest on this forum. Running after the engine is shut off is crazy. Maybe it is just the water pump or fan trying to cool the engine. Get a mechanics stethoscope for $10 and pinpoint where the noise is coming from that is the first thing. I agree with the other comment about it was a throw away bid bc he did not want to mess with it. I would be it is an engine out repair, or atleast the front clip comes off. You cannot even do VCGs with out pulling the engine. I would also scope the cylinders, the rattling could be related to scored cylinders, I would probably expect this with the mileage. It sounds like you may want to pay someone to scope the engine, but you could do the stethoscope yourself. A few hundred bucks and you have a more informed perspective
Where are you located? I am sure someone could point you towards a good indy.

That west chester dealer is garbage, I had my car there once, jerked me around forever.
Not too far away, and in my opinion worth the drive, where I had my engine work done, in Hightstown NJ is City Auto Center. Tony Sandu is legit and trustworthy. Anything on any of my cars I cannot do myself goes to him.

Apologies for posting it in the incorrect forum. I am still on the fence. I will get it back from the Mechanic tomorrow and record the Start, Drive, and Stop to share with you all. Maybe it will offer more clarity. But just an intuition that it sounds steep.

Noise after turn off is an auxiliary water pump you can buy for change aftermarket on eBay located under driver side fender liner. The rest is a rip off unless properly diagnosed.
I have M278 with 160k miles still riding on original timing chain and camshaft sprockets.
