Spark plug R & R

I changed my spark plugs today. I have to say that this was a PITA. It is probably one of the more difficult spark plug changes that I have done compared to the many other cars that I have done this to. It probably took me about 2 hours and that is using cordless power tools. I wasn't able to use the power tools for everything but having the Milwaukee 3/8 inch drive extended reach m12 helped out a bit.

After I completed bank 2, I started it up and the check engine light came up with a cylinder 8 misfire. I found that I tore the boot for the coil and it was grounding to the motor so that has to be replaced. It was not a complete tear so I taped it up with electrical tape and moved it to the number 6 cylinder for easier access after I get the part to replace it.

I then did bank 1 and there is even less room for tools to get plugs out. After buttoning up the engine, I warmed it up and didn't come up with any codes.

I have the OETuning tune on my GL63, After looking at the plugs, It looks to be running great with no issues. Though I only used an GPS app, I got a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds and 1/4 mile time of 12.4. I would say that is resectable for a 5500 lb SUV.

Make sure you indexed the plugs. MB indicated failure in engines where the plugs where not indexed properly.

No, did you index the plugs? Torque value is not what I'm talking about

if the Bosch plugs were used, indexing should not be needed...

Bosch Plug Kit is specifically designed for the Mercedes M278, M157 and M152 engines and includes the special socket to remove the spark plugs.
  • The threads in the spark plug and in the cylinder head are calibrated in such a way during the production that the correct installation position is guaranteed

Good to know on the tune, I also am running OETuning and have zero issues for over a year.

Many other tuners used to tell you to use different spark plugs (Weistec, Renntech). Renntech now suggest OEM after first suggesting aftermarket. Weistec recommends their plugs.
