GL63 Transfer case chain

Just for info on the GL63 transfer case. I had transfer case issues so I went to change the chain. It went pretty smooth and fast. I left the transfer case in and separated it to change the chain(HV-091). This was a lot faster than removing the transfer case as an entire unit. I had raised the suspension and drove it up on ramps and worked on it on my back. ll together, it took about 2 hours with cordless power tools. It also took less than a quart of 134 oil.

I am curious about what made you suspect the chain in your transfer case was bad already... excessive freeplay?

Wondering how they catch all the loose metals swirling around the single quart of oil... did you notice any internal magnet or a magnetic plug or just none of the above

I am familiar with transfer case chain stretch as it happened to my gl450 back in 2014. it was the same sound. There is a magnet in case and there were metal flakes but not much. After I heard the noise I immediately downed the gl63 and bought a chain. I actually also bought a 23k mile transfer case also(just in case). I have that one sitting in storage so I will have it if I need it in the future.

great info angelglo. Im curious about the "noise" you had.. im chasing a vibration that comes and goes (not wheel balance) ML63, 2014, 86000 Kms , have replaced the driveshaft assembly with no improvement., figuring maybe the chain might cause the vibration

it was the common clunking noise for stretched chains or broken tensioner. It's pretty distinctive and can not be mistaken for a vibration. Did you also change the flex joint and support bearing?

thanks Angelglo, for the info. yes whole new driveshaft , with center bearing and flexdisc., there is a small bit of movement of the transfer case output coupling, but doesn't seam excessive. hopefully i get to the root of the problem and ill let you know the outcome
