Tire chains - front or rear on 4Matic?

I can't find the answer in the Manual - maybe it's too obvious - but on 4Matic GLAs, chains go on the REAR wheels, right? Thanks.

Edit Dec. 5: Found the official recommendation on p. 302: "never mount snow chains on the rear wheels". On all GLA's the chains go on the FRONT wheels.

I would encourage you to put snow tires on all 4 wheels since you have all-wheel drive. Regular all-season tires aren't adequate in any serious snow amounts.

M-B says front wheels, never rears. Not sure whether they mean never all four, or never rears without also fronts. But if only two wheels, I'll choose fronts. Their instructions seem to apply to both 4matic and 2wd.

You said that your MB manual referred to chains for only putting them on the front. Chains are very different from actual snow tires. I actually grew up in a state that got snow so that's why I recommended the snow tires. I would also suggest that you look into some type of anti-rust undercoating to put on the chassis of your car. Salted roads are very damaging to vehicles. I might also suggest that you take a class in how to drive in snow and ice for safety reasons.

Growing up driving in the snow, the one thing your learn is, front wheels receive more weight during braking due to dynamic weight transfer. That means they have more traction and will transfer more of the braking force to the front wheels. The unfortunate fact is with chains on the front wheels only you increase the stopping power of the front tires even further and the center of mass will then be behind the center of resistance and the car will tend to swap ends under moderate to heavy braking. This is the simple physics of the issue, very straightforward and not rocket science. This is the way it works on the road, too. Not theoretical. Not sure what the Mercedes manual is saying, but I can tell you chains on front only create a very dangerous situation when you need to stop.
