I started out driving yesterday, heard a noise in the dash like something came apart or fell and then the whole dash started vibrating. Turned off the a/c and it stopped. Found a whole *** mouse in the blower today. Really Mercedes? How is a whole mouse able to get in here?
There is an access for rodents on each side where fenders connect with hood. And on top of that, cabin filter is on exhaust side of the blower, not on intake, like in most of the cars. I had leaves stuck in the blower last year and was trying to prevent that again by gluing window screen mesh over intake vents, but than I noticed large keyhole looking openings on each side under the hood, providing access to the duct plenum. I spray engine bay ever few months with peppermint solution.

If those keyholes on each side of the fenders under the hood are open to the intake, then the intake is open to the world. There are other openings behind them, between the plenum cover and the firewall.
It's not wide open but not exactly sealed either. There are baffles and walls on the sides but there is definitely a way for a mouse or a chipmunk to get in. I had burnt smell coming into the cabin and wanted to eliminate the chance of mouse nest in the duct or mold on HVAC coil, so I looked through the ducts with digital endoscope. I was able to snake the endoscope through the left side of the plastic plenum, under the hood, and look into the blower.
MICE - Learned a trick from someone many years ago if you have mice in your garage, take a plastic lid'ed container like Cottage Cheese, cut a small access hole in the side and add a mixture of Baking Soda and Jiffy Corn Mufin Mix (Equal Parts), snap on the lid and strategically place it. Mice are attracted to the muffin mix and also ingest the Baking Soda, their digestive system cannot easily expel gas and that's all you need to know.
