Curious about this. There are articles as far back as 2014 saying that MB will partner to build unknown engines in a Nissan plant in Tennessee. Then there are people who say they know it’s the M260/M264 because they are delivered in Nissan boxes and have Nissan part numbers on the blocks. Then there are other people who say not true. There are other articles that say Nissan rejected the MB design on technical issues and refused to put it in their vehicles. In the European diesel GLBs the engine is supplied by Renault.

MB didn’t need Nissan to build an inline 4 with problems. The M271 has many pages of posts here about its lack of durability. That engine predates any dealings with Nissan. The 260/264 is supposed to be an evolution from the 270/274 and there’s not much info on that engine. It would be good to get the whole story because 260/264 variants are installed in almost the entire lineup.

270 and 274 are the same engine. 270 east west, 274 north south.

260 and 264 are the same engine and are descended from 270/274. 260 east west and 264 north south.

254 is descended from 264 and is north south.

All are problematic MB 4 bangers.

27x were built in Decherd TN in a Nissan plant. Same time frame as the GLA was built on the Juke platform. Great idea, right?

All 27x/26x/25x share some overlapping components and therefore failure modes. All are known for egregious low mileage failures. All have inconsistent quality - sometimes there is a good one, often times there isn’t.

MB 4-bangers are to be avoided.

Maybe we can get an admin to delete starting with post 26 (mine). Can’t get enough details from the local dealer as I start to service these newer engines. Some of the things in the replies are inaccurate.

So the car hit 30K milage and sure enough last Thursday check engine light came on. Wife said the car shook when she started it, but then it was fine. The fastest appointment with the loaner was week away, so wife drove the car locally for a week. Car drove fine and check engine light stayed on for a week until two days ago when she took it on the highway.
Dropped car at the dealer yesterday and luckily codes stayed in the memory. Sure enough they are changing the cylinder head.
In a way I am relieved since I knew this day was coming. Initial response from the dealer that I should have it back Monday or Tuesday.
Talking to the service adviser regarding this issue, he said that model years 2024 and 2025 come with new re-designed cylinder head.

Good luck with your repairs. The 2021 GLA250 in our fleet failed at exactly 30,000 miles like your GLB. My GLB seems fine so far at ~61,000 miles. With an apology to @Serhan for maybe getting too far off topic, I had heard that it was corrected on the 2023 models. Can’t seem to get a consistent answer on that.

My 2021 GLB250 was fixed last month for this issue at 22,500 miles. I was told the replaced head was a redesigned part. I guess we will see as I plan to hold on to this car for at least three more years

My GLB35 is at 22K miles and going for its third yearly service, so far it is fine but still not much miles on the engine...

It was not you, other 2 unrelated posts. MB has similar issue and warranty extension on 2011-2016 V8 engines also... Hopefully it is fixed on all new models...

I'm interested, don't know if it's me? The PDF is cropped mid-paragraph. FYI, TIA.

My 2022 GLB250 had a P219F code and my dealer replaced the head under warranty no questions asked. My cousin is a MB mechanic in another state and said this is a pretty common issue with these engines. So common, that they are keeping spare heads around the shop, since they are doing so many of them. Sure enough my shop had a spare one and we had our car back a little over 24 hours later.

Just went over 30K miles sometime yesterday. So far so good. How quickly did you guys see the check engine light come on after hitting 30k?

Mine happened within 100 miles of that mark, but I do not think it is a good indicator. Some might have it at 17,000 miles and some still do not have an issue after 50,000 miles.
There was no warning either.

My wife’s 2021 GLB250 failed at 27,800 miles. Our 2021 GLA250 failed only a few miles after 30,000 mile service. My 2023 GLA250 is at 20,000+ and still okay. 🤞🏻
As @Vladimir Livson said, there is no warning, whatsoever. The CEL just comes on one morning.

I had this service performed

The vehicle was refusing to start. If you waited awhile, it would start. I assumed it was the battery ad replaced it. The problem got worse and it would stop at lights, even with the stop/start off. Dealer replaced the head. Does this solve the problem permanently or just restore it to the ticking time bomb it was?

For what it’s worth, the service manager at my dealership says that the new heads will not have repeated failures.

quick q:
this warranty repair is not dependent on previous owners/previous maintenance intervals/etc right?
e.g. if i am buying a used GLB250 from a MB dealer, but they dont have service records from the first owner, would that void any warranty claim for this specific issue?

What year? How many miles? Has the cylinder head already been replaced? The extended warranty doesn’t apply to 2023+ models.

Most Mercedes Benz extended warranties have always applied to the vehicle independent of ownership. Since you are at a dealer, pose your questions to them and get answers in writing. Get them to give you copies of the warranty letters that apply to the GLB you’re interested in. Any GLB put in service after September 2020 is still under original warranty unless it has over 50,000 miles. This one has no verifiable maintenance records so it can’t be a CPO.

Coverage under the exhaust valve/head extended warranty depends on the specific trouble codes being exhibited, not maintenance records. But since they already admit there are no maintenance records, they could throw that up as an issue. MBUSA is not requiring maintenance records for claims, but because the dealer actually pays the claim and gets some kind of reimbursement from MB, their opinion matters.

Good news (?) - I’m in the US and took mine in this morning bc I felt a misfire Friday evening (happened Thursday too but restarting the car got rid of the engine shaking and check engine light). The service manager called and let me know it was a misfire, needed a new cylinder head, and would cost me $0. In case that helps you make a decision one way or another on keeping it.

also, mine is out of warranty by about 17k miles. Probably an important note

great to hear. I heard they honor the cylinder head for another 15 years?

My engine does sound funny, like there's a drummer with a high pitched snare living in the engine bay. Anyway, I'm hearing this takes either 3 days to 2 months of repair time. So sad, it's a new car and already the engine has issues.

Anyone else get this letter? Scanned below:

"Warranty Extension: M260 Cylinder Head

Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.

Mercedes-Benz AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that a defect which relates to a prescribed emission standard exists in certain Model Year 2019-2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, CLA, GLA, GLB vehicles. Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. has therefore initiated a voluntary warranty extension related to the M260 cylinder head on these vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population.

What is the concern?
Mercedes-Benz Group AG has determined that on certain vehicles with M260 4-cylinder gasoline engines, the tightness of the exhaust valves might be impaired in individual cases due to increased wear on the exhaust valve seat rings and valve guides. Based on engineering analysis, advanced wear may cause insufficiently sealed combustion chambers and, as a consequence, thermodynamic imbalances, which would cause the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, additionally, the customer might notice a rough engine running. In the event of progressive mechanical damage (e.g. if the customer does not perceive the rough engine running and/or ignores the MIL), as a consequence stronger thermodynamic disturbances and misfires may occur. These would be correctly detected as misfires by the OBD system and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) would illuminate (1-trip MIL). As a result, emission values might increase and relevant emission standards might be exceeded. The defect described above has no impact on safety. In case of the described issue, the driver might notice a rough engine running and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) would illuminate. Owners who notice any of the above described warnings should contact their nearest Mercedes-Benz dealership immediately to have the vehicle inspected. There are no specific precautions to be taken with respect to the subject issue until the corrective measures are implemented.

What will your dealer do?
The standard warranty for the physical part, the cylinder head itself, will be extended for all affected vehicles to a period of 15 years/ 24 1,000 km full useful life (FUL). Within the extended warranty period, the repair measures will be performed free of charge for affected vehicle owners.

Extended warrantv -
15 years or 241,000 km

Component - Cylinder Head

What should you do?
If your vehicle displays any of the aforementioned symptoms, we kindly ask that you contact your authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer at your earliest convenience to schedule an appointment.

Additional Information
In the event that you are no longer the vehicle owner, or have had a change of address, please contact Mercedes-Benz Canada via email at cs.can@cac.mercedes-benz.com.
If this is a leased vehicle and you are the Lessor, you must send a copy of this notice and any subsequent notice to the Lessee within 10 working days after the day on which this notice is received.

Should you have any additional questions or concerns after contacting your authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, please contact Customer Assistance at cs.can@cac.mercedes-benz.com.

Sincerely, Customer Services Mercedes-Benz Canada

So Where Do I Start, Okay Let’s start with I received the same letter still have a copy of it . Long story short went to the dealer cylinder was misfiring , was told I need to fix my oil pump and also may need a new cylinder head ! Price for oil pump $150 Labour $5000 lolll I kid you not . Got it replaced at another shop btw $800 , so I was also told at the dealer there was no extended warranty . Fast forward a couple months got the car fixed at me own shop new cylinder head cost $10000 . Since these Mercedes dealer do not know what warranty they have or don’t for that matter .decided to contact Mercedes Benz Canada in June 2024 was told my case was esclated days weeks months go by nothing called back requested to speak to super / manager was told I would be updated if it took longer than a week to resolved, again days weeks month past . Called again 😂 I cannot make any of this up I have to laugh now because the frustration levels are high at this point . Was told the same extended warranty dosent exist / was a mistake ? There is no extended warranty for my car even tho the extended warranty on Cylinder head although it clearly says on the paper my year make and model of car on the extended warranty paper they sent me . Also this information was relayed from Mercedes Benz Germany as they stated it was mistake warranty and they wouldn’t refund me Now I know what I wrote sounds stupid now imagine hearing that from Mercedes Benz Canada . Any suggestions I’m all eyes / a lot of typos I know bare with me .
