The base system is perfectly fine in my option. If you read through other threads especially on GLE and GLS forums, people are not happy with upgraded system. I think it's all about perception and expectations.

2021 Glb35 AMG (2013 GLK 350)
Compared to Harmon Kardon came with the older models such as GLK/GLE/GLS, the Burmeister is a downgrade from our experience. Burmeister has only one central speaker plus the surround system speakers in comparison to 3 similar size speakers in the front with Harmon Kardon plus the surround sound speakers.... When we first drive the GLK, we were impressed as it sounded like we were in a concert hall... That is why I think a lot of people arenot happy esp for the upgraded Burmeister as it doesn't give the same experience....

My 2020 Audi Q3, Prestige trim, had the upgraded B&O sound system and it had outstanding sound quality.
15 speakers plus a woofer, 3D surround sound. 16 channel amplifier with 680 watts.

I’ve had some work done on the C250 to cut the noise level. Now it’s as quiet as an S Class and the high end Harmon Kardon in it sounds great.
But the best was the 2005 ML350 that had the Bose with ambient noise cancellation.
Why Mercedes would go with lower quality sound is beyond me.

GLC EQB GLS C300 convertible
The base GLB system is fine for me because our base model SUV is not objectionably noisy, but not really quiet either. The base system is definitely better than the base system in our 2003 E320 was. The biggest mistake we made was not holding out until we could find one with Sirius XM as it cannot be upgraded.
I’ve had some work done on the C250 to cut the noise level. Now it’s as quiet as an S Class and the high end Harmon Kardon in it sounds great.
But the best was the 2005 ML350 that had the Bose with ambient noise cancellation.

But 90% of the GLBs are base.
I don't know if it's due to the chip shortage, or maybe the base GLB speaker is just fine?
