GLB 2020 – ESP issue: Car won’t move properly when activated

Hello,

I own a 2020 Mercedes GLB (automatic transmission) and I’m facing a strange issue with the ESP system.

When ESP is ON, the car barely moves. It feels like the system is constantly braking or holding the car back — the engine revs, but the vehicle “shudders” and doesn’t gain speed.

When I turn ESP OFF, the car drives completely normally with full power.

  • No check engine light, only the ESP indicator when it’s ON.
  • The problem happens every single time ESP is activated.

Has anyone experienced this on a GLB or any other Mercedes model? Could this be a sensor issue (ABS, wheel speed, steering angle) or some kind of software glitch that needs recalibration?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Our ‘21 GLB250 has been rock solid (>80,000 miles) since the cylinder head problem was fixed when it was nearly new. So no help there. But knowing how other new Mercedes work may help.

Do you have a scanner dedicated to or programmed for late model Mercedes after 2017? A simple code reader will not be sufficient because it probably can only see generic codes for the powertrain, similar to the CEL.

Something is keeping the an ESP related component, probably the brakes, active.
Is your steering wheel centered when driving straight on a level road?
Does the hill hold function properly?
Does the problem occur in all driving modes?
Has the GLB been in any kind of collision, even rather minor?
Look for codes related to the ABS control unit, steering angle sensor, body position sensors, wheel speed sensors, and the place I would go first - the yaw rate sensor. The body position and yaw rate are determined by triaxial (X, Y, Z) accelerometers and may all be in the same box. Yaw rate is a direct input to the ESP logic. When yaw rate and steering angle do not correlate, a skid is indicated and ESP will act.
Also look for transmission codes because the GLB is using the ABS to function as a virtual locking differential. Any transmission performance codes could be disrupting the logic.
