2016 GLC and 2017 BMW 530xi M-Sport
We traveled on an extremely windy day yesterday and we are still so impressed of how quiet our GLC is. I am not sure why there seems to be such big differences in wind noise with some GLC's. I think ours is one of the quietest car that we have owned.

Also - is amazing how smooth the car handles. Not sure if it is the air suspension we have, but really handles well.

I think as someone mentioned, it may depend on what car you had previously as people get used to a certain level of noise.

Previously MB cars owned: 2008 ML 320 CDI and 2012 350 Bluetec.
Other brands: 2009 and 2012 Mini Cooper S Cabrio JCS with RFT - very noisy!
Before that, BMW 01, 03, 05 X5 , 99 540, 91 & 95 535, 88 325ix.

And this GLC with MB Acoustic Glass on generally noisy RFT is probably the quietest of them all. Currently on winter run flat tires. Top speed so far 150km/h (90 mph). NO complaints! Or I am getting older and loosing my sharp ear ... That may be so !

My car before this was an '02 ML 55 AMG.

The GLC certainly seems quieter - but then again, the engine was pretty good at drowning out all other noise in the ML!

GLC Noise

A little more information regarding The GLC being noisy... Or not. The following is from the official GLC press release:

"The GLK model was noted for its quiet ride, but here, too, the larger GLC surpasses it. Mercedes engineers focused not only on reducing the absolute sound pressure level (dB), but also addressed sound frequencies. They devoted special attention to the airflow around the body, as well as sealing systems at doors, windows and the body shell. As one result, the GLC achieves the same wind noise index -- a figure to classify aero-acoustic quality – as the new E- Class.
A quiet cabin begins with a rigid structure. Some front structural elements follow designs used on Mercedes convertibles. Other features include:
• High-strength magnesium alloy cockpit crossmember
• Highly sound-absorbent acoustic windshield; acoustic front side
windows optionally available
• Three-point engine mounting
• Floor with reinforced tunnel, additional beading and reinforcements to
reduce tire noise and eliminate vibration.
• High rigidity of the rear area due to the use of cast aluminum
components.
Aerodynamic measures to reduce noise include:
• Sealed headlight surrounds.
• Front wheel spoilers with patented slotted wheel arch linings for
optimized air flow around the wheels.
• Aeroacoustic and aerodynamic design of the A-pillar.
• Extended roof spoiler with optimized flow properties and joint seals.
• Aerodynamically optimized underbody with extensive engine
compartment and underbody paneling.
• Aerodynamically optimized wheels and tires.

Other noise-reducing measures include intelligent use of sprayable acoustic materials in the body shell, use of fiber-reinforced plastic with absorber for partitions between major assemblies and injection molded firewall insulation.

Read the press release. It has a lot of info in it.

Thanks awjenni, some good tech stuff. Our previous vehicle was a Land Rover D4 with a bull bar and snorkel so the GLC will be bliss on the noise front.

Yes, I believe it's under vehicle settings. There's an option to activate reverse camera.

I thought I may be the looney one hearing noises. Apparently, car reviewers from down under hear it too!

They heard it around 62mph.

"There’s only the tiniest hint of road and wind noise that enters the cabin at around 100km/h on coarse chip surfaces, but otherwise, the GLC is the epitome of calm."

Great review, but why only an 8?

Surely 42.5 divided by 5 = 8.5 or has maths changed since I went to school eons ago

Last edited by re_tired; 02-22-2016 at 11:23 PM. Reason: maths good at school but not spelling.

Noise from from drive when cold ?

Hi.
For the first 90 seconds, or say 500 metres, when the car is cold, I get a noise from what sounds like a driveshaft or transmission ?
The problem is, when i get to the dealer, the car has warmed up, and the noise has gone !
Its a UK Spec GLC 250d Premium AMG Line. Polar White with Night Pack

Hi jgleonard, from what I've read there's a lot going on as a modern diesel car is warming up. It looks like your car may have to stay the night at the dealer so they can listen and maybe check fault codes?

I'd let you know about mine but it is just being unloaded from the ship,so I'll have to wait a few more days for a first hand experience

I picked up my GLC last week. It was a really good car. Compared to my E Class (2012 pre-facelift), I think the E Class is slightly more refine, like wind noises and stuff, but still, nothing much to complaint about the GLC, except...

As it was a dealer stock car (might have used for demo?), I notice the followings:
1. I notice a steering wheel has a tiny dent on it. I kind of live with that, as I did a little dent myself on my E Class anyway.
2. Then in the rear left passenger seat belt, it had a little dirt mark, probably some engine oil, which I tried to clean with wet tissue, but not much use (and I have beige interior, which makes it obvious when the seat belt it pulled out for use). I will keep trying, but at least if I don't pull out the seat belt, it is not apparent.
3. Finally it is the ISO Fix flap. On the same passenger side, it fell off, and I didn't notice this during inspection of the car. Took it to the service centre of the dealer on Saturday, and they say they will order me a new one, but I better follow up closely with it, because the service advisor didn't really look sincere in saying it, and expect that I won't really follow up. Here is the photo of the broken ISO Fix flap.

Overall, I still move my GLC (and my E Class), but wish I can have the ISO Fix flap fixed soon, so I can kind of feel I have 2 perfect cars!

hi rg9390, Demo or not,I reckon the dealer should fix the 2 concerns you have without any quibble. Keep on to them

The dealer will replace the ISO fix flap for me. I actually asked, its like US$15 for a flap, so thats not going to make anyone's day difficult. The dirt on the seat belt, they will see what type of cleansing should be used to clean up and let me know on it.

First day of heavy rain in Melbourne today, and I have to say the wipers on our GLC are driving me nuts! The judder across the windscreen so heavily - both visibly and audibly - it's incredibly annoying.

Wondering whether it's just me, or anyone else has this problem?

Ours seem to be fine, but it is the squeaking back brakes that are driving me nuts when you backup.

I've had my GLC for a week. No problems with wipers or brakes, so don't think it's a design problem.

+1 for the noise. It became better after the wiper blades were replaced. But the noise soon came back. Giving a bit washer liquid seems to help for a while. Looking for a long term solution.

Did the dealer apply a rain repellant, such as RainX? This has been known to cause chatter. The only other thing I can think of is that a wiper arm is slightly tweaked.

Yes they did apply RainX. You're probably right, I didn't think of that being the cause. Just sort of assumed that it would make the wipers glide even smoother haha.

I am going back to the dealer soon anyway, will mention it and see if there is anything they can do.

And yes, ay55 - the judder temporarily goes away when I apply a bit of washer liquid.
