Rain Sensor Dirty during Torrential Rain

I just had the message rain sensor dirty see owners manual pop up while driving in torrential rain. The wipers automatically slowed when I needed them to run at full speed.

I can not see how the sensor could have registered as dirty when any dirt would have been immediately washed away. I was on a freeway with the traffic moving at 40kph due to the torrential downpour.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?
