Pre-paid maintenance - buy now or later?

Did you buy or planning to buy the pre-paid maintenance with your new GLC? How many years do you recommend? I heard that you can purchase this out of state for a lesser price or save sales tax, is this true?

I bought it. Much cheaper in the long run especially if you keep car for greater than 3 years.

A gaggle of MB's
1) If leasing a new MB - it ALWAYS pays big time to "add" prepaid maintenance - since that is a dded capitalized cost - meaning you end up "paying" just the depreciated percentage of the original cost.

2) For purchasing a new MB - it depends on how long you plan - or reasonably intend to keep your new MB in yrs/mils.
Please remember you never want to "overbuy" prepaid maintenance - meaning pre-paid maintenance is not refundable and not transferable if you trade/sell that MB early.
If you do plan to keep for 40K+ miles - then BEST money is to pay the 1st/10K service out of pocket - do not buy at time of purchase - THEN BEFORE your 2nd/20K service - buy a 3-pack before service checkin to cover 20/20/40
If you plan to keep for 20K or 30K miles - then get the appropriated 2pk at time of vehicle purchase.

We always keep our cars for as long as we can, so we plan to do the same when we get our new GLC. Based on your recommendation, we shouldn't get it upon purchase and to buy it before we hit the 2yr/20K. This is definitely something we need to consider if it will save us some $$$.

What is the cost for 3 year maintenance on the GLC? Seems like I found it on the MB site once but for some reason cannot find it again. I want to say it was $975 but I may be wrong.

**EDIT*** Duh, I found it in the service and care section upon build (go figure)...and hey I was right it's $975

Like fabbisrb1 said... If you are leasing the prepaid maintenance is a great value because you are only paying the residual cost of it.

Why is this better than just buying the 4 yr 40 from the get go?

Paying 10K out-of-pocket is lower than paying the "bump" for 40K ppd over 30K ppd.

Bigger the MB, and/or diesel - bigger the "bump" - any MB still saves you some..

My dealer is offering $2300 for 84/75000 extended warranty and $1675 for 4yr/40Kmiles pre-paid warranty. They are making us buy it before we pick up the car tomorrow. Is this a good price? I read somewhere that Marc Rose, a guy from California offers a good deal on extended warranty and pre-paid maintence. Is he worth a try?

I paid $1275 for the 4 year pre-paid maintenance. You should not be paying more than that. I tried to negotiate it lower but they told me it is locked by Mercedes Benz since they reimburse the dealership. Sounds like someone wants to make a few more bucks on the deal.

I brought up the fact that the website says $1275 for the pre-paid maintenance, but then they told me that it varies based on where you are located. I'm located in Massachusetts, so they are saying that the service price normally cost more than other states thus, the price would then be higher. To top it off, we have to purchase it when we pick up the car tomorrow, otherwise the price can go up!

I think they are scamming you. You have until the first maintenance to purchase it. I would call around to another dealer and see if you get the same story. Smelling something fishy. Hmmm

Well, prepaid maintenance can be purchased anytime before service checkin.

Yes - if planning to keep your GLC past 40K miles - best value - pay 10K out-of-pocket - then before 20K service buy a 3-pack - for most areas in the US this shaves off a couple of $100 versus buying 4-pack at time of purchase.

Note - prepaid service is NOT refundable - so do not OVERBUY prepaid service.

Dealer cost for prepaid service is set each year - so is the retail - and the dealer doesn't pay any less for for it when you purchase your car.

That said - future service prices - and future pre-paid service packs - all seem to go up a tad each new year around Sept.

The other thing - you can"t delay your service - meaning you need to use that year's service in 14 months - regardless of how low your mileage is - after 14 months that year of prepaid maintenance drops-off/absorbed-back by MB.

Keep the beat !

Its my understanding the program must be purchased at any time prior to the first A check.

Have not run the numbers but have been told buying the four year pre-paid maintenance plan one can expect to save about 30%. Compared to paying for each service individually.

My dealer offers the A service for 170 and the B service for 270. that is 610 for the first three years. Far less than what I have read on this thread.

What am I missing? This discussion assumes service visits either annually or each 10,000 miles, but when I downloaded the Maintenance Booklet for the '16 GLC (from the MB USA site) it states that after the A service the B services should come each 20,000 miles or every 24 months. Can someone clarify? Thanks in advance.

I don't know this personally yet as I haven't taken delivery, but I think what they are saying is:

1. "A" service costs less that "B" service.

2. Services are A (10,000 total) - B(20,000) - A(30,000) - B(40,000)

Therefore, if you buy a three pack, its best to buy after the first A service as then you get the two B's and one A, which is worth more than two A's and one B.

Sound right?

richmondR, Your correct on 1 and 2. However, in addition to mileage there is also a calendar interval. So, the requirement is 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

Additionally, my dealer has confirmed the package must be purchased prior to accomplishment of the first A service.

That's what I thought larry, you have to buy before the first service. Makes sense.

I bought the 4 year for my GLC. You can also buy longer term after that according to my SA if you keep your cars. I also have prepaid on my c class.

I also bought the 7 year bumper-to-bumper warranty a year ago for a CLA 250 for about 2,000+ dollars.

Referencing this comment: "Additionally, my dealer has confirmed the package must be purchased prior to accomplishment of the first A service."

The dealer did not correctly express this to you - or sometimes not correctly understood.

1) Prepaid maintenance can be purchased at ANY TIME prior to the next service - and will be effective starting that next service. If you are purchasing with intent to use for the 1st/10K/A service - it can be purchased at time-of-vehicle - or any time BEFORE service checkin for that 1st/10K/A service can be 5 minutes before service checkin - and CANNOT be purchase effective for that service after check in.

2) When PURCHASING a new MB - if you have intention of owning/driving 40K/4yrs - YES - cheaper to pay 1st/10K/A out-of-pocket - then purchase 30K before 2nd/B/20K service.

3) When PURCHASING a new MB - if you have intention of owning/driving 30K/3yrs - YES - best strategy to buy 3-pack.

4) When LEASING a new MB - YES - best to buy correct mile/yr service pack at time of purchase/lease ONLY if dealer is correctly putting that as a capitalized cost - meaning you will pay residualised cost for that pack. Example - end lease residual on your MB on your contract 60% - then you are paying 60% cost for that service pack.

4) Do NOT overbuy service - meaning unused prepaid service is not refundable, and cannot be transferred to another MB

5) In considering prepaid service cost/convenience savings - dealer retail charges for service can be higher in one region than another region - however MSRP for the service pack is the same nationwide and offers more savings for those higher cost service regions.

Keep the beat !

When I bought the GLC I traded in a 2015 CLA 250. They gave me the money I paid for the CLA 7 year warranty , 2075, back to me and off the sticker price of the GLC. They also took the 3 year service maintenance and transferred it to the new GLC.
