Engine seems loud

2014 cayman s - 2017 Macan S--
Engine seems loud
First time MB owner and love my GLC.But not familiar with the 4 cyl. turbo engine. My engine sounds loud almost like a diesel when standing outside. very noisy. Is this normal and does your glc sound the same

So you know - modern fuel injection - especially with the very-well-engineered MB-Turbo-4 - form maximum fuel efficiency - fuel injection now runs at incredibly high pressures - which lets itself at idle to "diesel" or "clattering valve" sound.
It happens with the best of engines - kindof a tech thing.

Yup. It's loud at idle from the outside if you are standing next to the car - like a diesel. Silent at Idle on the inside. Sounds good when accelerating and pushed.

I agree, the engine is noisy, but then it's a direct injected, turbo charged four banger. An inherent characteristic of this type engine. Get used to it as many more are comming.

Thanks for the info. I didnt think that the engine would be so noisy on a MB.

I know what you mean. I thought the same thing when I heard it first time. I think it's normal. But compared to Acura it sounds a bit loud. I was used to it from previous C class.
From inside the car can't tell a difference. It's only when the car starts and I'm standing right in front of it.

Have a great Mercedes repair shop that are Mercedes experts and have worked on my previous E350 and ML320...
I was very concerned about the noise factor from the engine, not having heard it on the E or ML...
They assured me that the clattering at idle is normal on the 4 cyl turbo and an inherent characteristic of that engine...
You can't hear it in the car and as soon as you rev or accelerate, it's gone...
Guess I will just have to get used to it...
No effect on the car/performance, just my mind...lol

Yes, direct injection makes the engine noisier. I was surprised at the amount of clatter when I opened the hood (and opened the sound insulation capsule). Also true of the Volvo, VW, Range Rover, Audi and our Macan. Our ML350 Diesel was quieter than all of the above.
