GLC Failed to proceed.

My GLC stranded me in a car park where it refused to start. Lots of warning messages and the engine would not turn over. Had to call MB assist to get it started. I visited the dealership where they cleared a lan-bus fault with the passenger airbag system. The service manager also confirmed that the GLC will not start if any safety system is inoperative.

Great, so it would rather strand you than let you drive sans safety features?

MB isn't the only one that does that. A friend with a Porsche was left at the end of a road on a mountain in the snow as the sun was going down because the ABS was inoperative. The brakes worked, just not the ABS. The nearest tow truck was an hour's drive away and was busy. I think he got off that mountain. eventually.

The computers on these cars are getting worse and worse. One little thing goes wrong and the whole system shuts down. Not good.

The worst part is that the fault locks the steering and locks in the car in park. The service manager confirmed that GLC's 9 speed transmission does not have a hidden manual release mechanism.

Bugger ! An Aussie expression for .....
"Not Happy Jan".... I would have thought you could limp home with these faults. Surely an over ride code, even if it meant any passenger got in the rear seats to minimise issues.
I understand versions of the G Wagen have the ability to have issues like this switched off, or at least overwritten. Maybe we all need a cheap Bosch OB11 ? Computer reader, reset tool in our glove box for minor issues and practical safety over rides ?

This is why the fewer unnecessary electronic "safety" options the better.

The lack of a limp home mode is unacceptable. It appears that Mercedes official limp home mode is a tow truck.

The unofficial Mercedes Benz limp home mode. (Courtesy of roadside assist)

Lift Bonnet

Remove Battery Cover

Disconnect Negative Terminal (Never use spanner on positive terminal)

Wait two minutes

Reconnect Negative terminal

Car will hopefully start.

Replace battery cover

Close bonnet

Drive directly to dealership.

Main problem with this method is that you clear the fault codes making dealer diagnosis more difficult but at least you can drive the car to the dealer, the alternative is a tow truck and then all the fault codes can be read by the dealer.

Tron786 may have a valid point here. Okay, a crazy signal out of the normal range expected from, say, a throttle position sensor should cause a global fail-safe shutdown, no argument here. But -- as noticed in Penn's thumbnails -- should a bad signal value from a "lane keeping" or "high beam assist" sensor also disable the entire car? I hope not. If so, I'm on the side of Tron786 with the fewer the sensors the better.
