Motion sickness while driving the GLC

I have been driving the GLC 250 4matic since our family picked up the car about a month ago.

Out of the family of 4 who use the car, I am the only one who experiences motion sickness , either as a driver or a passenger. It is probably due to the fact that I am prone to motion sickness, but I have never felt sick driving other makes of car, and I have driven Honda CRV and the previous ride, a Lexus.

I have mostly use the Comfort mode of drive and I have tried changing to Sports hoping that it will make me feel better. It didnt work: after each ride, I feel rather woozy and "floaty" for the day and it really takes away the joy of driving this wonderful car. I suspect it has to do with the Merz suspension system, which kind of smooth out the turns and bumps.

I wonder if anyone else feels the same as I do and whether there is a way to alleviate this effect.

You might also read up on threads referring to windscreen distortion etc. and consider if this may be contributing to your situation.

I would ask if this is your 1st SUV - since SUV's have a higher center of gravity - you may need to "get used to it"... just my thought..

That may be the reason. I remember back in the 90's when the first Acura MDX came out, some posters were mentioning the same thing. Most of the speculation, I think, went to the tires and suspension. I'm wondering if it's that the ride is smoother than one is used to/and or movement is enough to upset equilibrium due to if being muted/baffled.
Hopefully, OP can get used to it.

I was just reading something in a forum about an Audi A4 driver that was experiencing the same thing. I'm thinking it could do with the suspension. I took a long test drive of a GLC a few month back and didn't have a problem.

I think it is unlikely that the motion sickness is due to the high centre of gravity of the SUV. I have owned a Honda CRV as well as a Lexus SUV and I never had any problem with the drive. In fact, I love the elevated seating of a SUV and that was a prime reason why I chose to buy the GLC

After reading through the earlier threads , it seems that a more likely reason could be due to a distortion of the windscreen which I checked carefully. But I did not notice any distortion at all. If there is indeed a distortion, it is not obvious at all to my naked eyes.

Just hope that I get use to the ride over time.

I'm not sure if you have it but one other reason might be driving with Distronic Cruise Control. With traffic it fluctuates a lot to keep the same distance from the car in front of you. It worked well but just felt not as smooth as manually applying gas/brakes.

I've read some about motion sickness; you might have too. It seems to be caused my a mismatch between vision and the body's perception/anticipation of motion via the inner ear. A recent study thinks it might be a defense against poisoning: the mismatch indicates one has been poisoned, and inducing nausea is a way to lessen the effects of the poisoning.

Any distortion in your windshield might contribute to that, of course.

My guess is that it's the switch to a German vehicle that's affecting you. They steer, handle, accelerate, and brake diffently from Japanese vehicles. (I've owned both.) From personal experience, I think this matters. I almost never get motion sickness, but I have when switching from a race car with super brakes to a road car. My body didn't get the experience it was expecting from applying brakes. The good news (for me anyway) was that it went away once I got used to the road car again.

Edit: it might also be the electronics of the steering/pedals creating the mismatch.

Have you got the Air Body Control option on it? At first with our fully size GL I really had to get used to the Airmatic suspension as I knew the roads and was anticipating how the car would move, but in combination with active cornering it just didn't do what I was used to from any other car. I noticed myself fighting with it and getting motion sickness. The moment I gave in and just went with the flow it went away again.
