Hi.
What tyres are being fitted to 20" rims either here or in UK or other RHD markets ?
My tyre size is 255/45 R20 , 101w rating.
Any info either here or PM would be appreciated, we have a250d.
Also what tyres for the 250d Coupe, 255/45ZR20 on front and 285/40ZR20 rear.
I'm in Australia and MB AU look like testing or providing yet unspecified tyres, Would like to be a jump ahead with as much info as possible, epeially if your tyres are now working or more impotant if what has been provided is a 'fail'.
Thanks

Hi all down under,
Wet Weather update on the tire change on GLC43 21" rims.
Well I happy to report that the new Continental Contisport Contact 5 Star with Conti Seal, 255/40 R21 Y XL fitted last week by MB Adelaide, have pasted the final wet weather test.
Improvements all cold temps experienced so far no tire skip/Crabbing.
Front end ride improved.
Wet weather with temps at about 7C no tire skip noticed , but steering did feel slightly heavier on full lock when slow speed maneuvering.
Overall improvement rating after 10 days use I would rate it as 100%.
Will continue to monitor and let forum know if tire skip/crabbing should return.
Thanks where thanks are due:
MB Adelaide Dealer, who have unlike some other dealers around OZ have shown that they are prepared to help their customers without trying to fob you off.
Teckno for all the research work he is doing on tire's for smaller rims.

Just had all 4 of my tyres replaced on my UK GLC 250d by Mercedes as I have the crabbing/skipping issue. They have replaced my Pirelli Scorpion summer tyres with all weather Vredestein Quatrac 5 255/45 R20 105 W- I think. Haven't had a chance to test yet if these fix or more accurately masks the problem but due to slightly higher temps at this time of year will be difficult to tell- anyone else have experience of these tyres?

GLC 43 AMG COUPE
Crabbing....no more.
Hi WMC021 some more good news on the Sunshine Coast.
I have now had the same replacements on the front and the skip no longer skips !!
My thanks to MBA and in particular my dealer SunshineCoast MB.
I'm still surprised that the tyres did the job but now a happy driver with a great product.
I will continue to monitor.
Thanks MB World, great forum.

Hi dazzler4Mb
Glad to hear that your dealer came through for you.Our weather in SA is a bit colder than the Sunshine coast at this time of year and mine are performing faultless since the tire change.
Just hope the dealers around the bigger cities like Melbourne and Sydney start to help their owners out with the tire changes.
Anyway very pleased for you.
Keep us updated on progress with the new tires.

Whilst the Vredestein tyres might sort the skipping issue- they are rare in the U.K. With none of the tyre replacement companies stocking them. Can only be purchased online. Not such a great solution. Suspect I'll need to get a space saver so that I'm not left stranded. MB should really offer this option instead of a can of useless goo.

Potentially good news from Sydney.. I spoke to a Service Advisor today who was fully aware of the issue and was aware of the tyre replacement option. Unfortunately 'stock is unavailable' yet for the dealership and I will need to wait at least a few weeks before I can book in. I will also need to be evaluated to ensure that the GLC will be eligible for new front tyres.. but I'm much happier after today's conversation and hope to be skip free within a month or two!

Surprised in Oz they are only offering to replace the front tyres- my preference would be to have all four tyres the same brand and type. In the U.K. the skipping problem is masked by the fitment of all season tyres as opposed to summer tyres as originally fitted. If in Oz the tyre change is the same then is it not an issue to have all season tyres on the front and summer tyres on the rear?

What did you have to go through and are you still happy with the outcome, Noise, Tyre Wear, Skipping/Slipping?

HI Dazzler4MB, I have a GLC250 currently on order with Sunshine Coast MB delivery 2 weeks time. I have bought this issue up with them, but all I have received so far was a waiver to sign which I have refused. My first Mercedes and I am shocked at their approach to new customers - Dealer & MB

Hi SunnyDayz,
I sorry to hear that MB dealers are still expecting People to sign this waiver ****.
Sadly at the moment OZ does not have a tire that cures or reduces the crabbing on other size rims other than for the AMG GLC 43 or 21"rims.
The UK have started to have some results with other brands on smaller rims but they not here yet.
Not sure if anybody else has had success yet with the smaller rim tire replace in OZ.
I know there are some members looking into the smaller rims tire choices.
It's a great car but sadly if you have the crabbing issue it can somewhat spoil the car, your new car feeling and have your friends raise a few eyebrows. It can be a bit unnerving for some people too.
If you have not experienced the crabbing issue get MB to demo it to you. It can get really bad with lower outside Temps.
Experience it before you take delivery at least you know what your in for.

I owned a 250D with 19" last year. On the slippery floor of my parking when raining I would get a slight crabbing. I switched to a GLC43 a couple of months ago also with 19", and yesterday rained and the crabbing was soooo bad I even got scared. My wife jumped in her seat.

Hi Daniel BG,
I'm not aware that it is an issue on LHD cars......are you sure you experience the crabbing issue and its not skidding on wet surface like concrete.
If LHD cars had the issue the Yanks would of sued the **** of MB by now.

Agree, if correct this would be the first time that a LHD drive car has reportedly got the issue.

I reported this last year with mi 250D in this same thread. It was a very subtle crabbing and the floor was very slippery and it was wet. Never had the issue in cold, even with summer tyres and 0ºC.
With the GLC43 never had the issue with summer tyres and cold (0ºC). Just the other day in very slippery floor and wet. But this time with the GLC43 the crabbing was more like jumping around...tight turn at slow speed.

This was posted on Ozzie site by owner GLC.
MB Oz response is 180 degree off from the positive response MB UK gave to its GLC owners.
Hopefully MB Germany will remind MB Oz of the positive values of supporting its customer base and not trying to maximise profits over ethics, all under the catch phrase of
'characteristics".
Time and positive action will tell.

I don't know the specifics of the case in question, but not good. My general impression is that MBC was fairly sanguine about the issue. Which probably partly explains why my salesman has left the dealership, since he didn't share that view, although it's not clear whether he jumped or was pushed.
FWIW, I have now very rarely experienced crabbing on my 19" non-RFT. Only once really, in cold and wet conditions on full lock doing a u-turn. The road surface was fairly coarse. I immediately sought out a car park where I could perform full-lock turns in both directions and couldn't get it to repeat the behaviour. So it is only under very rare conditions. I wonder whether such rare full-lock behaviour just happens on this style of 4WD, since it seems different to the frequent behaviour that some have reported.

What is really odd is that some owners in other cities have had tyre swaps, according to reports on mbworld.
