Engine Designations?

Engine Designations?
Do MB engines have specific models or designations that are independent of the car they are in? If I want to Google info on the engine itself is that possible? From what I've found on the web the engine always has a description but lacks a model or designation.

Mercedes does have designations for their engines. Wikipedia has a list. The current C300 is a m274 engine.
