GLC TPMS

I will like to find out if there are 2 different TPMS system for the GLC?

I was expecting a ABS-sensing kind of TPMS for my GLC but when I took delivery of my GLC with 19" RFT option wheels (without TIREFIT/Jack) , the TPMS seem to be those that have a sensor unit installed in each wheel and all 4 wheels have their individual pressure displayed.

Anyone here have non-RFT wheels specced from factory that comes with TIREFIT/Jack? What kind of TPMS is yours?

Rumour has it that either version can be installed as per national MB Sales Department choice. Here nn Canada most systems are the AWD rotational sensing difference that sets off the warming (no actual pressure stats are shown on the info screen/just a pressure loss warning) yet in the USA, they use individual sensors to offer actual live pressure values per wheel.

The ABS sensing system you are referring to is called Tire Pressure Loss Warning System (TPLWS). From what I've been told, the system they use will depend on production cycle. As like you, my GLC was suppose to come with TPLWS as per Canadian specs but it was built with TPMS.

When did you get yours? Picked up mine 5 weeks ago. I thought it came with TPLWS. Nobody ever mentioned TPMS to me. I have yet to check what they actually installed on it.

I'm picking up mine next week. From the build sheet my SA sent me, it had code 475 - TPMS. I believe code 477 is TPLWS.

Kind of a pain in the butt because now I have to buy another set of sensors for winter tires which I believe cost about $300+ CDN

Also, easiest way to check which system you have is look at the tire valve stem. Metal stem will mean you have sensors.

Are you buying wheels also or just changing tyres?

both, wheels and tires so will need second set of sensors.

Suggest you shop around. $300 seems a bit steep.

Oops, sorry, meant this for LHTO128.

I would have thought that TPMS/TPLWS is tied to the RFT vs non-RFT specifications?

Let me explain it further, my thinking is that if the GLC is equipped with RFT, it makes more practical sense for a more detailed individual pressure readings for each wheels. Reason being, RFT will not show any external signs of pressure loss (ie. steering pull, deflated look) until it is too late? So a more detailed warning system (ie. TPMS) will allow early pressure lost to be looked into before it gets worse.

I would have thought TPLWS will be less sensitive since is it base on estimate/calculations off the ABS system.

Any thoughts?

You should be able to find reputable brand TPMS for $80-$90 US. Beware of cheap Ebay offers.

Agree. Have fitted TPMS before on Toyota, SAAB and alike. There are good aftermarket units out there.

GLC in Oz only come with TP warning systems, not sure re 43 version, but GLC 250d in wagon and Coupe cannot read individual rims. Poor decision by MB Oz to not offer TPMS as a feature, Warning system not accurate enough, tyre already below critical pressure, increasing damage before warning alert is activated.

Curious"er"

I find it curious that MB Germany would install a specific system for tire pressure for Canada and bounce back and forth as parts were available. I would think each division (Canada MB/USA MB/UK MB etc) checks off the options they want as a standard features, and within reason groups up packages of options that they think fit their demographic. On the Canada MB site they even state our cars are specific to the Canadian Market needs even though just across a nearby border (same weather) the US versions are not the same. If I remember they added default extra underbody protection, all-season opposed to summer tires as default and a slew of other differences like default heated front seats and wiper jets.

I asked my MB rep whether the tire pressure loss gave a general warning or indicated which tire was soft and he stated it was a general loss of pressure as the 4matic system would sense wheel rotation difference. Just this past week, a nail was residing comfortably in the groove of my now 6 year old rear tire, the leak was slow (weeks/months?) and the GLK display flashed in red warning me. I initially did not see/feel the nail, added air and reset the system. 4 days later same warning again...tire to be fixed. No indication of which tire was affected though as the 4Matic could sense it, why not just tell me? Proper sensors would have been preferred.

Those with a GLC coupe that came equiped with TPMS, does the picture of the vehicle show a coupe or suv?

I have a coupe but mine shows an SUV which I found a bit odd.

It makes a lot of sense that the Tire Pressure Loss Warning System (TPLWS) is the default for Canada. At least to me, now I am getting my winter wheel and tire. I do not need to install the TPMS in each winter wheel, that is a win for me.
