Park assist perpendicular parking

Does park assist provide perpendicular parking?

What do you need to do to activate it?

Yes, at least it does in models sold in this country. I've only used it once. It operates just like parallel parking. You drive past the parking spot slowly and then stop. The dash should indicate that a parking space has been identified. Having your indicator may help. You select reverse and then say OK to the offer to assist.

On the one occasion that I used it, the car had to have several attempts to get into the spot. It's not something that I'd use often. A major problem is that if there's a car behind you, and there often is, the driver will generally not expect you to reverse into a perpendicular space, and will either not leave enough space, or take the park himself / herself oblivious to your intention. This is where the blinker may help.

Does there need to be cars parked on both sides of the open space? Or will the car park in an open space next to a parked car with an open space on the other side?

I honestly don't know. I've only used it once. It may operate like parallel parking, but if there's too much of a gap it may not sense that it should perpendicular park, and may default to parallel parking instead. I suspect that it needs cars on both sides to detect perpendicular parking, although the distance to the kerb may also be a factor in the calculations. As I said, I don't know. This is all just semi-educated guesswork. What does the manual say?

Thanks for the reply

I tried it with one of our other cars parked with no other vehicle beside it and the Park arrow did not come on so I suspect it only senses if there is a vehicle on either side.

I will try it in a parking lot just for fun although the way you explained it, seems kind of useless. I'll just have my seeing eye dog park it for me

A gaggle of MB's
Well... I would suggest you download the Pdf copy of your Owner's Manual from mbusa.com website - Under Owner's Resources - and in the Parking Assistance Section - after Distronic - MB gives you accurate detailed description of what the system does - and does not - do. That way you can give your pending ADD a rest.

The description in the maunual maybe accurate but not very helpful. A graphic would be more helpful. Not sure about your reference to ADD? But please try to restrain your scarcistic comments to yourself. Thanks.
