Ashtray removal and replacement

Ashtray removal and replacement
Has anyone replaced the ashtray with some kind of rubber mat? We don’t smoke and storage is at a premium in the GLC. I can’t find any off the shelf rubber mat for that area so hoping someone has done this before.

So after more research it appears there is a part for the C class. Without actually buying it I don't know if it will fit perfectly in the GLC. I also noticed there is ambiant lighting blocked by the ashyray. Once the ashtray is removed, it lights up the storage area nicely.
I don't know why Mercedes has to include the stupid ashtray as standard, and most of us don't even use it. Lose lose situation. We lose storage area with nice ambiant lighting, need to spend more hunting down a rubber mat, and Mercedes didn't need to pay for all these ashtrays to begin with.

In EU the non-smoking configuration is standard; if you want the "slow-suicide-by-voluntary-inhalation-of-toxic-fumes--edition" you need to order (and pay extra for) the ashtray; named "RAUCHERPAKET" in German

I was going to make a crude comment about stop being cheap and just buy the rubber mat because surely it cant beeeeee that expensive right?
Well its about $35 from my local dealer.... for a injection molded pliable mat. what the heck??
EDIT: and furthermore the ash tray delete rubber mat is only $5 for the GLK..... i literally don't understand how the GLC has a rubber mat six times the GLK. The GLK one is hella bigger too.

Group buy?
we need precise measurement and a willing manufacturer.
Or we just cut it ourselves using tool chest liner.
Joking aside I might just suck it up and pay the $35. Just want the ashtray gone so wife can enjoy her new GLC. It is a principal issue, not a wallet issue.

What I did was get black felt and (repeatedly) cut it to size. Under trim it, then keep refining it as you feel what is "poking up" as you insert it into the cubby. Works great -- a rubber mat would be better, but didn't know that was an option. The space fits an iPhone X perfectly and my thin wallet.

I cut felt to fit the ashtray and use it as my coin stash. Used it as a coin stash as is - but the rattling of metal on plastic made me nuts.
Just an idea.

You bet. I just cut it close and shoved it in, but if you take your time and use some spray mount glue (3m available at most craft stores) it will probably look OEM. Just don't put a cig in there LOL. Between the felt and glue, would be interesting to say the least.
