Door Hinge

Replacing the lower door hinge on the driver's side and my question is the plate of the hinge on the door side has two screws, do these have nuts on them that requires removing the door panel to access ?

Don`t know but before I`d remove the door panel I would loosen one of them partially and try to push the loosened screw in, if it does not push in I would remove it completely. Worse case scenario if you hear a nut fall is you remove the panel then. The remaining screw will hold just fine while you remove the door panel if you have to, but I don`t think you will, good luck.

Why are you replacing the hinge?

The hinge makes a couple of loud knocks when opening the door. It looks a sealed unit so nothing to grease, just replace

OK. ...so I had the exact same issue. Dealer replaced the hinge under warranty (at least they told me they did) and within a few days the noise was worse than ever. They took it in to the workshop for a few minutes and told me that they adjusted the tension on something and that solved the issue. Not sure what exactly they adjusted but might be worth having a look at!

Thanks decorily, because you mentioned the dealer adjusted something on the hinge I looked at the hinge ( which is a two part system) , and below the door part of the hinge there is a little nut. I tightened this nut and VOILA ! no more "knocking noise" . The nut is actually a set screw that tightens the prong on the door side of the hinge which eliminates the noise. I pass this along FYI for anyone who has a similar problem with "knocking noise" upon opening/closing the door

VCamm I’m a bit late to this party...but do you have any pictures of what you tightened? My door is doing the same thing on my w205.

Jaimem04
It’s the little nut at the bottom of the hinge.
Hope this helps

Thanks that helps a lot. My door makes a loud popping noise when I open or close it. Hope it fixes it because i don’t know how to take the hinge off to replace it.

Very little adjustment and check, repeating if necessary.
MB have specified a torque for this but on occasion this needs to be ignored!

Lifesaver!!!

I created an account simply to thank you for this tip. I was so worried it would be a costly repair. Sat my 1yo in the front seat so he could supervise,
grabbed a socket, and 2 minutes later we had a smooth and silent door! Much appreciated sir.

@decorily Thank you so much for posting this. I had this issue last year at the beginning of covid. MB wanted like 1k to diagnose/fix it and because of covid my indy was closed. I brought the car to another indy close to me who is an MB "specialist", he charged me 3-4 bills plus another bill to paint the hinge. I agree'd and he "fixed" the problem.

Fast forward 6-8 months and it starts creaking again, probably due to the hot and cold climate here in Toronto, that bolt is getting loose or its just not holding tight. Anyways, I called the indy and they said some **** about warranty and they may be able to cover the parts because its genuine OEM but I would have to pay for the labour. I scoured the internet to learn how to remove the door panel and do it myself as I thought it was the hinge again, but I found this.

My god, literally 5 minutes and a socket set and the noise is gone. I am sitting here thinking to myself I could of saved 5 bills last year by trying this first. Thank you so much, I truly appreciate you posting this, you're a MVP.

Same experience. 1st dealer accused me of 'hyper extending' the door.?. Not returning there!

2nd dealer confirmed popping and replaced hinge under warranty 11/2020. 10 months and 3500 mIles later popping resumed. A hard twist with a 7mm wrench and quiet again.

Do you all have problem only on driver door?

What a great help this forum is. Was worried that I may be into large bills to fix, and as others say, 5 minutes with a socket and all sorted.

OMG, 2 minute fix, I recommend everyone try that first, thank you very much. I thought there was something wrong with the hinge mechanism, but it turns out the set screw was loose, 7mm socket, minimal effort to tighten, problem fixed!!

WOW - so glad I found this thread. My driver door is doing this exact problem, and I can't wait for the rain to stop so that I can pull the car out and fix it. It really makes the car sound old and decrepit!

Hi, how much are you guys tightening the nut, I mean mine is already just more than hand tight....does it need to be super tight....am afraid I might break something or round off the nut if i put too much force on it?
