You just saved me $996. Had my CLS in for the 60k service today and they reported "noisy driver door lower hinge." Wanted $996 to replace, and 2-3 work days. I took a pass on having them fix it and looked at it when I got home. Had some trouble piecing it all together until I found your post. That set screw was only hand tight. I loosened it by hand and the grinding/popping noise in the hinge got worse. I hand tighten it, then put a socket to it and tightened it fully. The hinge is absolutely quiet now. My question is one of trust with the service dept. at my dealership(where I have purchased 5 Mercedes). Why did the mechanic and service dept. recommend a $996 repair when a 10 second screw tightening was the fix? Were they intentionally misleading in order to cash dollars for the service dept? The alternative is almost worse- Are they so mechanically inept they do not know a simple 10 second fix? If this is the case I do not want these folks taking the engine apart on on my AMG GTC. Sheesh!

DO NOT GO TO DEALER SERVICE CENTRE
The only way to these dealers make money is through their service centres trust me I worked there!! Go on google find a trusted mechanic with incredible reviews and use him!! Mb and bmw will give you the crapp if you use anyone but us you warranty will be voided which is complete bs.. trust me run far away from those service centers they are heartless and could give a crap if it’s an old lady or a mother with 10 kids!!

Thank you so much! My 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300 had a metallic clunking sound when opening and closing the driver-side door. I ruled out the door check strap as the cause, and the sound seemed to be coming from the lower hinge area, as if a bolt was loose, but I couldn't locate it.
Thanks to your help, it was fixed in just one minute, saving me a trip to the repair shop. God bless your kindness and assistance!
